Thanks to two Vashon businesses, Islanders have donated more than $13,000 to aid organizations in Haiti.
Bob’s Bakery held fundraisers on Sunday, Jan. 17 and 24, donating 100 percent of sales from bakery items to several Haitian nonprofits. The business raised more than $12,000 over the two-day fundraiser, $4,000 of which came from an anonymous Island couple, said Bob’s co-owner Jill Beytebiere.
“Thanks to the whole community coming out, a whole bunch of people doing small things made a big difference,” she said. “I want to give a big thanks to the community.”
She said she was thankful for the support of the community.
“It feels like a drop in the bucket, but it’s better than doing nothing,” she said. “I’m thankful that there was something we could do.”
And Giraffe, Vashon’s fair trade store with artisan-made items from countries around the world, has garnered more than $1,200 for Mercy Corps through sales of Haitian-made items and cash donations, said owner Priscilla Schleigh.
Artisans in Haiti’s artist collective survived the earthquake that hit Haiti on Jan. 12, she said, though some of them suffered damage to their homes.
Schleigh added that her store recently received a shipment of Haitian-made cut metal artwork pieces, which are now for sale. She’s eager, she said, to receive a shipment of paper mache crafts made by Haitian artists, but given the massive rebuilding still under way in Haiti, she’s unsure when the new pieces will arrive.
Other fundraisers for Haiti are in the works on Vashon, including a massive rummage sale, celebration at Open Space for Arts & Community and “pass the hat” events at Café Luna open mics.
