After several days of an all-points-bulletin search for Dash, the spirited black sled dog was found Saturday afternoon in a ravine south of Agren Park, where her leash had gotten caught on a bush.

Dash, a dog that has competed in the famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, slipped away from The Harbor School last Tuesday, just before she and her owner Scott White were to be the highlight of an assembly. She broke away from some students who had her on a leash, ran across the street and disappeared into the woods, according to Jackie Mollison, the school’s office manager.

Volunteers were quickly called in to help search for her, posters went up around the Island, Harbor School students used Facebook to spread the word, and reports of sightings soon came in, said James Cardo, head of the small, private school. Vashon Island Pet Protectors also helped, posting a photo of the dog on its website and sending an alert to its many members. And Cardo himself spent hours looking for the famous dog.

On Saturday, Cardo got the break he was hoping for, when he received a call from a woman who lives near Agren Park saying she and her family had heard repeated howls from a dog in the woods near their home. Cardo and six others showed up, he said, and also heard the howling.

The skittish dog stopped howling, however, when the party started combing the woods. Cardo said he began methodically bushwhacking through the thick brush and eventually found her, with her leash wrapped around a bush.

The dog, he said Monday, “was nervous. But she was fine.” She’s been reunited with her owner.

“A happy ending,” he added. “It was awesome.”
