About 1,800 Vashon homes on the southend of the Island were without power after a tree fell across some power lines in Paradise Valley Monday morning, triggering a widespread outage.

By 12:30 p.m., all but 60 of those homes had gotten their power restored, according to Voice of Vashon.

The incident, which occurred near the corner of 111th Avenue S.W. and S.W. 216th Street around 8 a.m., caused such a huge power surge that a small fire broke out in a nearby home, Vashon Island Fire & Rescue Chief Hank Lipe said. The surge caused the electrical panel in the home to melt, resulting in the small blaze, Lipe said.

“Fortunately, they were home, and the fire was contained,” he said.

Puget Sound Energy tried to restore power to the 1,800 homes by redirecting power to other circuits, said MacKenzie McDowell, a spokeswoman for the company. However, when PSE attempted that earlier on Monday, “It held for only a few minutes,” she said.

PSE estimates power will be restored to the remaining 60 households by 4 p.m. Monday.

“I don’t think they expect it to take a real long time,” McDowell said of the power restoration effort.
