The JesusBarn Farm, one of Vashon’s most iconic and quirky buildings, is up for sale along with the Victorian farmhouse and nearly 20 acres of land that make up the property.
Listed for sale earlier this month for just a few thousand dollars shy of $1 million — $995,000 to be exact — the property has been in the care of islanders Jennifer and Craig Sutherland and their children since 2003. Upon purchasing the property, the Sutherlands restored the house and blended together the classic Victorian architecture of the four-bedroom, 1.75-bath home with modern amenities such as an updated kitchen and bathroom. The couple also built a new barn — the current JesusBarn Farm — near where the original was.
The new barn was turned into an event space where the Sutherlands organized countless weddings and events. According to the Sutherland’s website, jesusbarnfarm.com, “once again the giant painted moniker (JesusBarn Farm) became an island landmark.”
The original barn, which collapsed in 1983, was built at the same time as the farmhouse, in 1904, by one of Vashon’s first settler families: the Shermans. The barn stood through the 1970s and was used as a commune of sorts for hippies who would hold gatherings there, including the Vashon Rock Concert in 1971 — the island’s own Woodstock.
According to local legend, it was at a 70’s hippie party that the barn got its name.
“The commune’s leader was visited by Jesus Christ with the request that all further revelry be dedicated to thy lord and savior,” jesusbarnfarm.com states. “That night, in 6-foot bright white letters, the word ‘JESUS’ was emblazoned onto the barn’s timbers. Thus the Jesus Barn was born.”
While the barn and home have been updated and cared for, the 2,180 square-foot farmhouse’s Victorian exterior remains nearly unchanged.
According to the property listing, “much love and hard work have gone into its restoration.”
