Vashon’s heritage association has purchased the historical home next door to its museum, closing on the sale last week for $383,000.
The nonprofit plans to rent the home, the 1910 parsonage of the church the museum is now housed in, until eventually transforming it into a historical education center.
“It was a cool coming together of something that was meant to be good for the island,” said Deb Dammann, the president of the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association. “I’m very happy about it.”
The group was under contract to purchase the house last year for $450,000, but the sale fell through when it learned what repairs were needed there. The house was eventually listed at a lower price, $399,950, and the nonprofit negotiated a purchase for slightly less.
“I think both parties felt this was a fair price when everything came together,” Dammann said.
The nonprofit raised about $160,000 for the purchase and secured a $225,000 mortgage. Dammann said the heritage association believes monthly rent will cover its mortgage payments and taxes, and it may eventually hold another fundraiser to retire the debt.
“The sooner we do that, the sooner we can start using the building,” she said.
There will be an open house at the parsonage from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
