Talks and gatherings on the business of caregiving, septic and well maintenance, Town Village program; meetings of the Community Council and Water District 19; free documentary screening on National Parks; and update on “Brown Briefly” radio program.

The Business of Caregiving

IRS tax expert and business consultant Deborah Diamond will give a talk in person and on Zoom at 6:30 p.m. Monday, October 17, at the Vashon Senior Center. The session, on the business of caregiving, includes a role-playing demonstration to help caregivers learn how best to establish the employer/employee relationship. Diamond worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 33 years and recently, with VashonBePrepared helping local businesses hit by the pandemic. Get more details at vashoncarenetwork.org.

Community Council

Vashon’s community council’s next meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the Zoom link tinyurl.com/bdd6bth6. The agenda will include an update from John Taylor, of King County Department of Local Services, a Vashon Health Care District update by its superintendent, Eric Jensen, details on a free health fair on Oct 29, and more. Water District 19

A special meeting of Water District 19 will take place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, prior to the regular board meeting at 6 p.m., in the district’s board room, at 17630 100th Ave SW. The purpose of the special meeting is to meet with state auditors for the district’s exit audit review.

Septic and Well Maintenance

Vashon Nature Center Director, Bianca Perla, will host a free online workshop on septic systems and well maintenance at 6;30 pm. Wednesday, Oct. 19, for any islander with a septic system or a well. Experts from Vashon’s Groundwater Protection Committee and King County Public Health will also enlighten attendees on how to prevent septic disasters and well contamination. The National Parks at Vashon Theatre

Episode four of the Ken Burns documentary, “The National Parks – America’s Best Idea,” will be screened at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Vashon Theatre. The episode, “Going Home, 1920-1933,” covers the role of the automobile in spurring road building in the national parks, and John D. Rockefeller’s purchase of land in the Teton Mountains. This free series, presented by Vashon Park District, screens a new episode each Thursday.

Basics of Buddhism and Zen

Puget Sound Zen Center will offer a five-week class, “Beginner’s Mind,” on the basics of early Buddhism and teachings of the Zen school, on Thursday evenings, beginning on Oct. 20. This class is for anyone who is interested in Buddhism and Zen – no previous familiarity is needed. Both in-person and Zoom participation is available.

Brown Briefly covers immigration

Islanders Susie Murphy and Jenna Riggs have long led a local immigrant/refugee rights work group. They join the Brown Briefly crew at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct 18, on Voice of Vashon 101.9 FM to discuss the latest immigration issues and actions.

Senior Center Villages

Find out more about the Senior Center’s Town Village program from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Senior Center, 10004 Bank Rd. The program’s goal is to support elders in our community to live in their own homes for as long as they wish to, as independently as possible. If you live in Vashon Town, this is a great chance to connect with neighbors, but all are welcome.
