Vashon Birds: Past, Present, and Future

At 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, the Vashon Heritage Museum and Vashon Audubon present a moderated panel with Ed Swan, Rayna Holtz, and Adria Magrath discussing how human impacts through changes in land use and climate change have affected Vashon bird populations over the past 150 years.

Prayers for Ukraine

An ecumenical prayer service, offered for peace in Ukraine, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 11, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. The service, jointly presented by Saint John Vianney, Bethel Church, Vashon Island Community Church, The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, and Vashon Presbyterian Church, will include prayers, singing, scripture reading, silent meditation, and an opportunity to give to the needs of Ukraine through the Red Cross. All are welcome.

Garden Club meets

The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club will hold its next meeting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 14, in the multi-purpose room of Bethel Church. The program will include a guest speaker, Kim Cantrell, as well as a chance to learn from club experts. Garden Club meetings are open to the public, although, at this time, the club requests that all attendees show proof of vaccination and wear a mask during the meeting.

Girl Scout Cookies for sale

Local Girl Scout troops will be selling cookies at IGA and Thriftway until Saturday, March 12. Due to supply chain issues, not all 11 varieties will be available. Cookie sales provide funds for troop activities, camps and girls’ entrepreneur training. For additional information, contact Carol at 206-861-5480.

Light up your life at Fix-It Café Lamp-O-Rama

Vashon’s first-ever Lamp-O-Rama will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Vashon Eagles and via Zoom. Pre-registration is required at vashonfixit.com to bring in a broken lamp to the Eagles so that it can be repaired by a fixer and then picked up later that day. Zoom appointments are also being scheduled for those who need assistance repairing broken lamps from home, or creating a new lamp out of any household object — an art called bricolage lamp making.

The Vashon Fix-It Café, hosted by the Vashon Eagles Aerie # 3144, is staffed by members of the Vashon Tool Library (vashontools.org) Vashon Makerspace (vashonmakerspace.org), Zero Waste Vashon (zerowastevashon.org) and Vashon Island Time Exchange, with support from the King County Eco-Consumer Program.

Help for low-income islanders

Islanders can sign up for Affordable Care Act health insurance, food stamps and ORCA Lift cards from 1 to 3 p.m. inside Vashon Library, or call Miguel Urquiza at 206-477-6965 or 206-491-3761 to do this by phone.

WIC, a supplemental food program for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding infants and children will also hold clinics on the third Wednesday of each month at the Methodist Church. Call for an appointment at 206-477-0002.
