Dine, dance, donate

Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS) has booked Billy Joe and the Dusty 45s to perform at its summer fundraiser, scheduled for 5-9 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at Dig Deep Gardens. Attendees are urged to wear their dancing shoes to enjoy the band’s high-octane, brassy Americana repertoire.

Iyad’s Syrian Grill will be at the event to serve up its signature dishes, and local businesses have donated specialty silent auction items. Beer and wine will be available for purchase at the Octopus Bar.

The Dusty 45s have played rock, rhythm and blues, honkytonk, and jazz together since 1997, and shared stages with Brandi Carlile, Lyle Lovett, John Prine, and Lucinda Williams.

Funds raised at the event will support youth programs including Vashon Kids child care, youth counseling, and the VYFS medical voucher program. Advance tickets, available at vyfs.org, are $65, or $75 at the door. A VIP package, for $150, includes a drink ticket and VYFS swag.

Walk in the woods

Walk through a mature Douglas fir forest with some madrone, big-leaf maple, and alder at a private Vashon forest in the fourth installment of Walk in the Woods. The owner, David Warren, has been stewarding this forest for 30 years, adding native plants and trees (mostly western red cedar) to increase diversity.

Meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 27 at 21204 Monument Rd SW. The property can accommodate about 10 cars — after that folks will need to park on Monument Road and walk in.

For more information, contact David Warren at 206-295-6670 or VashonForests@gmail.com. All Walk in the Woods programs are free.
