Ice cream, films, fun at the Senior Center and more.

Ice Cream Social

The Vashon Heritage Museum will host its annual “Festival Friday” ice cream social from 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 19, in the Museum’s backyard. The event will include ice cream for all, yard games, music from the Lazy Dog String Band, and the unveiling of the museum’s hydroplane exhibit in the new, outdoor Roger Stanley Hydro Boathouse. The event is free, with donations welcome.

The Book of Tan

Islander Peter Ray will show his film, “The Book of Tan,” about Tan Cahill, a beloved islander who died in 2022, at the age of 92. The film, “The Book of Tan,” will be screened at 12 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at Vashon Theatre. The free screening will be a celebration of Cahill’s life, with a display of photos and mementos from his life.

Cahill was a regular dancing presence on Vashon whenever and wherever there was music in the air, said Ray. Ray’s 90-minute film, shot in 2008, features Cahill reading essays and poems, and telling stories about his life. All are welcome.

Upcoming films will include: “Silver Dollar Road” (shown on July 21), which tells the story of a Black family who does jail time as realtors steal their waterfront property; “Kerner Report” (shown on July 28), which explores the findings of the 1968 report and why it is still relevant today in analyzing racial dynamics in U.S. cities; and “How Childhood Trauma Affects Health Across a Lifetime (shown on Aug. 4), a documentary building on the preceding films and discussions.

Water District Meeting

Water District 19 will meet Monday, July 22 at 6 p.m. at the District’s Board Room, located at 17630 100th Ave SW. The purpose of the meeting is to continue discussion on water unit allocation and potential policy changes to the water unit allocation and other business, as necessary.

Brown Briefly

They will describe the festival’s new offerings, and speak about how VIFF’s parent organization, Vashon Film Institute (VFI), is expanding its mission from showcasing award-winning independent films to fostering Pacific Northwest films and filmmakers.
