Senior Center
The Vashon Senior Center, at 10004 SW Bank Rd., offers a hot lunch at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and activities throughout the week, with upcoming highlights including a meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 3, for the Center’s Low Vision group.
At 1 p.m. Monday, April 7, King County Resource Access Team, a customer service unit of the county’s Department of Community and Human Services, will provide information to help connect seniors to resources, navigate services, or bridge short-term financial gaps.
Additionally, the Vashon Oneness Center offers a free opportunity for islanders to meditate together every Monday from 5-6 p.m. at the Senior Center.

The Breathable Body
Join author Robert Litman for a five-week club exploring his book, “The Breathable Body: Transforming Your Life One Breath at a Time,” from 11-12:15 on Tuesdays, April 1-29, at the Tree of Life Wellness Center.
This series will detail breathing practices for better health, addressing issues like asthma, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and more. The class has a sliding scale of $15-$25 per session. Reservations are not required.
Books are available at Vashon Bookshop or from the author. For more information, contact robert@thebreathablebody.com. Reading the book is not required to attend, but will help in understanding the concepts.
Rainbow Blingo
Vashon’s most colorful fundraiser returns on Saturday, April 5: The Vashon Senior Center’s 2025 Rainbow Blingo Spring Fling at Camp Burton.
Hostess and chanteuse Louvel will return to host the evening. Appetizers include pastry puffs, bacon wrapped dates, Thai chicken satay, Korean beef skewers and more. The dessert auction is sponsored by John L. Scott and will feature sweet treats including baklava, cheesecakes, flan, tiramisu, cider, shortbread and more. The Senior Center will also auction off baskets of Vashon art, wine and more.

Care Closet Giveaway
Vashon Care Network’s Care Closet will hold an Open House and Giveaway from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 6. Surplus equipment and supplies in the giveway include walkers, commodes, crutches, tabbed disposable underwear, wipes and many other items. The Care Closet is located on the grounds of Vashon Lutheran Church, 18623 Vashon Hwy SW and celebrates National Library Week as a member of Vashon’s Lending Library Coalition. Browse their equipment and learn how to borrow items in the future.
Brown Briefly
The Brown Briefly crew interviews guest Michael Meade at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, on 101.9 FM, streaming live at voiceofvashon.org and on the VoV mobile app.
Meade is a renowned storyteller, author, and scholar of mythology, anthropology, and psychology. The Brieflys — Craig Beles, Amy Drayer, Truman O’Brien, Kevin Jones and Bruce Haulman — will as ask him about how he came to Vashon and discuss such wide ranging topics as autocracy, liberty, diversity and living in a time of overwhelm.
Food Bank Fundraiser
Help raise money for the Vashon Food Bank at a gourmet dinner service from Chef Dre Neely, of island restaurant Gravy, at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 11 at Open Space. For more information, visit vashonfoodbank.org/events.
Electronics recycling
Zero Waste Vashon hosts its annual Electronics Recycling Event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Vashon High School. The event is free, with donations accepted.
Not accepted at the event: Rear screen projection TVs, miscellaneous metal boxes, cabinets, or large devices. No appliances except microwave ovens. Large flat-screen TVs, old-style CRT TVs, and CRT computer monitors require a $10 charge per item for disposal.

Public safety roundtable
Islanders are invited to a public safety roundtable discussion at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at the Vashon High School cafeteria, convened by the Vashon-Maury Community Council and including panelists from the King County Sheriff’s Office.
The event, “How Can Islanders Work with the Sheriffs to Make Vashon Safer,” will begin with a one-hour panel discussion with Sergeant Theresa Schrimpsher and Major Coby Hamill from the sheriff’s department; Tom Walsten from Vashon Youth and Family Services; Tanner Yelken from Vashon Thriftway; Sarah Sullivan, a mother and social worker; and Jim Hunziker, a nurse practitioner who works with islanders who are homeless, according to event organizers.
The discussion will be moderated by incoming Vashon HouseHold Executive Director Amy Drayer. The second hour of the event will open the conversation up to the audience. If the trial roundtable format is successful, there will be more of them in the future, according to VMCC. The VMCC board is also looking for people interested in joining to help create more programming for the island.
Autonomy workshop
Not on Our Island presents a workshop, “Anchoring in a Storm,” aimed at helping participants learn to set boundaries, build autonomy and choice, and find an internal anchor even in a time of challenge. The workshop is from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.
Deborah King, a yoga therapist who partners with the Dove Project to create yoga therapy offerings for survivors of gender-based violence, has presented workshops on secondary trauma and stress management for Northwest Justice Project and Comunidad, as well as on yoga therapy and MS with Swedish Neuroscience Institute’s medical staff.

Flea Market
Vashon Eagles will host the Finders Keepers Flea Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26. The market will be held indoors, with live music and food available. Inclusion Island Spring Party
Join Inclusion Island, a group of adults with developmental disabilities and their friends and family, for a spring party from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, at Vashon Lutheran Church, at 18623 Vashon Highway SW. The afternoon will include tea, treats and craft-making for Mother’s Day.

Blood Drive
Bloodworks Northwest will be on-island to help islanders donate blood from 10:15 a.m. through 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Vashon Lutheran Church. Visitors must be 16 or older, and should eat a hearty meal and drink plenty of fluids prior to donation.
