Daughters Dance, Tool Sale and an electronics recycling event

Senior Center

The Vashon Senior Center, at 10004 SW Bank Rd., offers a hot lunch at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and activities throughout the week. Upcoming highlights include free classes taught by Margaret Hoeffel on spinal mobility and decompression, from 10-11 a.m. weekly on Fridays, and 10-11 a.m. every first and third Wednesday.

Attend a watercolor class from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, April 10. at 1 p.m. At 1 p.m. Friday, April 11, attend a talk by local historian Bruce Haulman, who will afterwards lead a guided tour of the Vashon Heritage Museum.

Additionally, the Vashon Oneness Center offers a free opportunity for islanders to meditate together every Monday from 5-6 p.m. at the Senior Center.

The 14th Annual Daughters’ Dance, which this year has the theme of Do-Si-Do Delight, will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

Attendees can enjoy a delicious pre-dance meal, and then kick up their heels as an expert square dance callers leads everyone through square and line dancing. Dress in your western-inspired attire — think cowboy boots, dresses, and hats — or whatever makes you feel ready to dance the night away. Library events

The following events soon take place at Vashon Library.

Get free tax help from United Way from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, April 11. No appointment required, no age or income limits. Bring the following as needed: your spouse (if filing jointly); a photo ID (and spouse’s photo ID, if filing jointly); Social Security Card or ITIN for each person on your return (including dependents); income documents such as W-2, 1099s, Social Security income documents, etc.); and business expense documents, if filing self-employment income.

If anyone in the household is insured through the Washington HealthPlan Marketplace, bring a Form 1095-A and each dependent’s proof of income. Also consider bringing your bank account and routing numbers for your direct deposit refund. Tax Day is April 15.

From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19, learn about herbal remedies from Rachel Caplan Erickson. Everyday herbs and spices can be used to help alleviate tummy aches, nervousness, colds and flus. At the end of the class, make an herbal tea recipe to take home.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, browse a selection of gently used books for all ages and help support local library programming at the Vashon Friends of the Library Book Sale.

From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, learn the traditional Japanese art of fabric wrapping in a free workshop teaching knots and techniques for gift wrapping and transporting items. All materials will be provided. The workshop is presented by the Consulate General of Japan in Seattle. Attendees should register in advance at tinyurl.com/yu9xywf6 as space is limited. The workshop is ages 13 and older.

Big Apples

How did Washington become the apple capital of the world? Humanities Washington speaker Amanda L. Van Lanen, Professor of History at Lewis-Clark State College, will explore that question in “Big Apples,” a free workshop at 3:30 p.m., Friday, April 11, in the Vashon Park District’s Ober Park exercise room. Van Lanen will also discuss shifts in the American food industry and what they mean for the future.

The event is hosted by the Vashon Park District and King County Library System through the Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau.

Food Bank fundraiser

Help raise money for the Vashon Food Bank at a gourmet dinner prepared by Chef Dre Neely, of island restaurant Gravy, at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 11 at Open Space. For more information, visit vashonfoodbank.org/events.

Tool Sale

Vashon Tool Library’s annual tool sale runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Open Space, 18870 103rd Ave SW.

It’s an opportunity to stock up on hand and power tools for your garden or workshop, and support the Tool Library, a Vashon nonprofit that has been lending for over 10 years with volunteer librarians who have processed more than 30,000 loans. At the sale, get great deals on all sorts of items, including circular saws, drills, routers, hammers, and screwdrivers. One-of-a-kind items and lots of consumables like nails, screws and sandpaper will be offered at bargain prices.

Electronics recycling

Zero Waste Vashon hosts its annual Electronics Recycling event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Vashon High School. The event is free, with donations accepted.

Not accepted at the event: Rear screen projection TVs, miscellaneous metal boxes; cabinets or large devices; and appliances, except microwave ovens. Large flat-screen TVs, old-style CRT TVs, and CRT computer monitors require a $10 charge per item for disposal.

Garden Club

The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 14, at the Bethel Church gym. Following a business meeting, guest speaker Bianca Perla, Science Director of Vashon Nature Center, will share how wildlife uses the island’s beaches, streams and forests, and how islanders can be good stewards.

Heron Meadow

From 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, join Vashon Nature Center’s Adria Magrath for a tour of Heron Meadow at VCA, the site of a 5-year restoration effort coordinated by the Nature Center.

Services Van

Washington’s DSHS Mobile Office will bring its services to the United Methodist Church’s parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April. 17, at 17928 Vashon Highway SW. Apply inside the van for food, cash, and medical services. Islanders can also drop off paperwork, complete a case, make changes to an existing case, or request an EBT card. Public safety roundtable

Islanders are invited to a public safety roundtable discussion at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at the Vashon High School cafeteria, convened by the Vashon-Maury Community Council and including panelists from the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The event, “How Can Islanders Work with the Sheriffs to Make Vashon Safer,” will begin with a one-hour panel discussion with Sergeant Theresa Schrimpsher and Major Coby Hamill from the sheriff’s department; Tom Walsten from Vashon Youth and Family Services; Tanner Yelken from Vashon Thriftway; Sarah Sullivan, a mother and social worker; and Jim Hunziker, a nurse practitioner who works with islanders who are homeless, according to event organizers.

The discussion will be moderated by incoming Vashon HouseHold Executive Director Amy Drayer. The second hour of the event will open the conversation up to the audience. If the trial roundtable format is successful, there will be more of them in the future, according to VMCC. The VMCC board is also looking for people interested in joining to help create more programming for the island.

Egg Hunt

Vashon Park District’s annual Eggstravaganza Egg Hunt returns at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 19, at Ober Park. Kids ages 1-10 are invited to look for colorful eggs filled with treats and prizes throughout the park.

An hour before, there will be a sensory-friendly egg hunt at 10 a.m. for children with autism or other sensory needs. The earlier egg hunt is a collaboration with SEPAC Vashon (Special Education Parent Advisory Council) to ensure an inclusive and enjoyable experience for all children.

Autonomy workshop

Not on Our Island presents a workshop, “Anchoring in a Storm,” aimed at helping participants learn to set boundaries, build autonomy and choice, and find an internal anchor even in a time of challenge. The workshop is from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.

Deborah King, a yoga therapist who partners with Vashon’s Dove Project to provide yoga therapy for survivors of gender-based violence, will present the workshop. Previously, she has presented workshops on secondary trauma and stress management for Northwest Justice Project and Comunidad, as well as on yoga therapy and MS with Swedish Neuroscience Institute’s medical staff.

Wastemobile is coming

Islanders can dispose of hazardous materials for free at the King County Wastemobile from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 25-27 when it visits the Tjomsland Gravel Pit, 17001 107th Ave SW, for three days.

The Wastemobile, which travels to communities around the county, accepts hazardous household materials such as old car batteries, oil and paint. Heritage Museum gala

On Saturday, April 26, the Vashon Heritage Museum will present ts its third annual gala at Open Space for Arts & Community.

This year’s theme — remembering Vashon in the 1960s — is tailor made for great outfits, art, music and memorabilia.

Guests will be welcomed by an immersive 1960s-era mural by local artist Sue Hardy, and can peruse curated displays from the Museum’s collection — including archival prints of Vashon in the 1960s, vintage cars, and other memorabilia — that will provide a backdrop for festive photo opportunities. A sumptious meal, inspired by 1960s recipes, will be served by Chef Chantel Jackson of Thyme Well Spent Catering, complete with complimentary wines and beers.

Voice of Vashon radio host Jeff Hoyt will offer up comedy, and deejay Prince Voltaire will get folks onto the dance floor.

Complimentary wines and beer will be provided by event sponsors Thriftway and Andrew Will Winery. Proceeds from the evening will go to support the operations of the award-winning museum.
