Anniversary of invasion of Iraq

March 19 marks the fifth anniversary of the United States’ entering Iraq. Islanders will be commemorating the date in different ways, from wearing black armbands to trying to get appointments with Washington’s senators who will be back in the state on their March recess.

From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and throughout the month, Two Wall Gallery is featuring a photography show by Martin Halliwell titled “In Retrospect: America Reacts to 9/11.”

Also Friday, March 7, is the World Day of Peace. Vashon Presbyterian Church will hold an ecumenical prayer for peace at 7 p.m. that will not be political.

Adult softball

The adult softball league sponsored by the Vashon Park District will have its organizational meeting at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Rochelle Munger’s barn on 12122 S.W. Cove Rd. All managers or a team representative must be present to join the league. Play begins April 14 at Agren Park. For more information about the league, contact Munger at vashonsoftball@hotmail.com.

Mustangs b-ball bake sale

The McMurray girls basketball program will be having a bake sale this Saturday, March 8, in the breezeway between Thriftway and True Value. Proceeds will go towards supporting the girls’ efforts to play a game on Friday, March 14, at Key Arena against Kingston. The fundraiser will also help purchase a new scoreboard for the McMurray gym. Islanders can also buy tickets for the March 14 game.

Poster chosen for Oz show

Terri Bassett, an artist new to the Island, won the poster contest for Drama Dock’s upcoming production of “The Wizard of Oz.” According to Bassett, the poster is a representation of “what happens in Oz when no one is looking.” It was drawn by hand in Photoshop, she says.

Her poster was chosen by a committee of artists and thespians, none of whom saw the names of any of the contestants until a winner had been selected.
