Highway closure north of Burton

Stretches of Vashon Highway between S.W. Burton Drive and S.W. 228th Street will be closed between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Monday, May 5, to Friday, May 9.

The closure is to enable crews from King County road services to repair the highway above and below its surface. A drainage pipe under the roadway deteriorated, washing out the shoulder.

Motorists can take a detour west of the highway via S.W. Burton Drive, 107th Avenue S.W. (north-south), and S.W. 228th Street.

Ferry fares go up

Ferry fares go up 25 percent for the summer tomorrow, Thursday, May 1. The increase applies only to single ride vehicle/driver tickets, not passenger or multi-ride fares.

Tickets on the Fauntleroy-Vashon and Point Defiance-Tahlequah routes are $14.80, but go up to $18.50. One-way fares between Vashon and Southworth will go from $11.55 to $14.45.

Ferry advisory meeting

There will be a meeting of the Vashon ferry advisory committee at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, in the McMurray Middle School library.

Carpe Diem open house

Carpe Diem Primary School will host an open house for interested families and students at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Land Trust Building, where the school is located. Janice Campbell, the owner and teacher of Carpe Diem, will speak at 7 p.m.

The evening will will include a short curriculum presentation by the teachers, a time to ask current parents questions, math games and a science gizmo project for students. This is a family event; kids are welcome.

Homestead open house

Homestead Farm & Wilderness School — for students ages 3 to 11 — will hold an open house from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 5.

The school offers a “hands-on, hearts-on” curriculum rooted in ecological and agricultural wisdom and emotional literacy, said teacher Sarah Wright. Its curriculum is informed by what she called “Enki-Waldorf,” as well as the Wilderness Awareness School and the principles of permaculture.
