Late arrival tomorrow
Tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 11, is a late-arrival day at Chautauqua Elementary School, McMurray Middle School and Vashon High School. VHS starts at 9:30 a.m., McMurray at 9:36 and Chautauqua at 11:05.
Normal bus routes will be followed, but times are altered accordingly.
Hear ferry chief on VoV
Voice of Vashon Standing By will feature an interview with Washington State Department of Transportation Assistant Secretary David Moseley next week.
VoV’s Jeff Hoyt and Rick Wallace recorded the interview with the state’s ferry chief when Moseley visited VoV to learn more about the radio station’s ability to air bulletins regarding ferry service interruptions.
The interview can be heard all week, beginning Monday, Sept. 15.
School board to meet
The Vashon Island School District board will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at Courthouse Square.
Superintendent Terry Lindquist will present a summary of students’ recently released WASL scores and SAT scores.
The board will also discuss whether to move future meetings to another location, since Lindquist has been informed that the fee for using Courthouse Square will be $2,000 for the 2008-2009 school year.
VMICC to vet election funds
An effort to resurrect public funding for electoral campaigns in King County will come before the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council (VMICC) at its meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15.
The county briefly used public campaign financing until an initiative inadvertently made it illegal, according to Washington Public Campaigns, a grassroots group spearheading the effort to bring public funding back to local elections. Last year, the state Legislature passed a bill removing that ban, and now both the county council and Seattle City Council are studying the issue.
Islander Roger Fulton plans to bring a resolution in support of the effort before the community council. Public campaign financing, he said, will expand voters’ choices, refocus candidates on issues instead of fundraising and discourage what he and others call “the arms race” for money.
The motion that will be before Islanders, Fulton said, is nearly identical to the one found at Washington Public Campaign’s Web site — www.washclean.org/voter-owned-resolution.htm.
