Seniors, turn in grad statements

Seniors, turn in grad statements

Vashon seniors should complete their statements in one week, by Wednesday, April 30, for a special section of The Beachcomber on graduating students.

Vashon High School students were given instructions on Monday about what to do: Write a brief statement based on five questions.

Please e-mail statements to Eric Horsting at arts@vashonbeachcomber.com. Contact him with any questions at the same e-mail address or call him at 463-9195. Interested parents can use the same address and number.

Students who attend private schools off-Island are also encouraged to participate. E-mail Horsting for more information.

Bike-to-school day on Friday

Friday, April 25, is a bike-to-school day for Chautauqua Elementary School students. This year, the school has formed “riding pods” — one from north of town and one from Monument Road.

Parents or guardians are responsible for accompanying children. Participants should have bikes, helmets, high visibility clothing and road-riding experience.

Riders for the “north pod” should meet at 8:30 a.m. at the former Vashon Elementary School gym located next to The Harbor School. The group will leave around 8:35 a.m. and ride to school together. “South pod” riders will meet at the corner of Monument Road and S.W. 216th Street at the same times.

Bikes may be stored in the Chautauqua gym. Parents are responsible for making arrangements for the return trip from school. Chautauqua P.E. teacher Rochelle Wolfe will allow students to store bikes in the gym until it is possible for to pick them up.

Last weekend of Wizard of Oz

Drama Dock’s “The Wizard of Oz” concludes its run this weekend with performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27.

The production uses a 1945 script that leaves out Toto and the red shoes from the movie but has plenty of other elements that have been attracting audiences. The show sold out last weekend.

Tickets can be purchased for $15 general admission and $10 for seniors and students at Vashon Bookshop, Books by the Way and brownpapertickets.com, as well as at the door if there are seats available at curtain time.

School board study session

The Vashon Island School District board of directors will hold a study session from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow, April 24, at the J.T. Sheffield Building. Business manager Tom Dargell will lead a workshop on district finances.
