Hey teens, take some pics
The Beachcomber wants your photos. Send us a good shot or two depicting some interesting element of Island life, and the paper will publish the best submissions.
Those whose photos get selected will receive two tickets to the Vashon Theatre, where their photos will be displayed on the silver screen.

Surface water fees on agenda
Lori Larkin, the Vashon/Maury Island Basin Steward for King County, will discuss surface water management fees at the next meeting of the Vashon Maury Island Community Council. She will address the county’s commitment to spend fees collected from Vashon projects on the Island. Joining her will be Rick Brater from King County Roads Division, who will answer questions about the seawall project.
The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 21, at Courthouse Square.
A look at a pet’s inner life
Mark Bekoff, who with Jane Goodall co-founded Roots & Shoots, a children’s ecological awareness and education group, will give a one-day workshop based on his book, “The Emotional Lives of Animals.” Bekoff will discuss how to observe emotional responses in pets. He’ll bring dogs to demonstrate his work; attendees may bring a small pet of their own.
The event takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, and includes a continental breakfast and vegan lunch. Suggested donation is $75, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. The event, sponsored by Afterschool Adventures, will be held at 10405 SW 140th St. on Vashon.

Cruise night at Senior Center
The Vashon Senior Center is planning a nine-night fundraising cruise to Canada on Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas in October 2009. Hear details about the cruise at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at the Senior Center. For more information, call Vashon Island Travel at 463-6871.
Youth council puts on film
The Vashon Youth Council’s cinema society will present the movie “Hollywood Shuffle,” starring Robert Townsend and Keenan Ivory Wayans. The free showing will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at the Vashon Park District building at Ober Park.
Coupons for a rental from Movie Magic will be given to the first five people who walk through the door.
