Apples for a good cause

Got apples? The Vashon PTSA is looking for local apples, which members will use to bake pies, crisps and other pastries for the new CiderFest fundraiser on Oct. 4 in the Village Green. If you have apples to donate, call Lee Ockinga at 370-0709 or Rose Edgecombe at 930-3670. PTSA members will come to your orchard and harvest your apples; they hope to do so by Sept. 26.

Bakers, too, are needed.

Proceeds will go towards the PTSA in support of the Vashon Island School District.

Day of caring for the hungry

Paul Wallrof, Vashon’s unofficial mayor, has taken his first official act as mayor: He has made Vashon a part of the 16th Mayors’ Day of Concern for the Hungry.

The regionwide food drive — supported by mayors in cities from Seattle to Black Diamond — provides food to area food banks during a period when demand for emergency food is often at its highest, between September and December.

Volunteers from Winder-mere will collect food in front of Thriftway, while volunteers from the Interfaith Council on Homelessness will collect in front of Vashon Market. The event will occur from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.

Meals offered at Village Green

People without homes are invited to soup and sandwich suppers at the Village Green from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday evenings. The service is being offered by the Vashon Neighborhood Mission to Those Without Homes, a new community-based group.
