King County is seeking 700 poll workers for the Aug. 19 primary, with 11 positions open on Vashon.

Individuals work the entire day, from 6 a.m. to around 9 p.m., with a one-hour paid lunch, for $125.04 base pay. Before working the polls, individuals must also undergo a three-hour training, which is paid.

The Island polling places that need workers are Ober Park, which needs four, McMurray Middle School, in need of three, and the Grange Hall and Dockton Fire Station, each of which need two poll workers.

Those interested in serving as a poll worker should call the King County poll worker coordination office at 296-1606.

When casting your vote next Tuesday, it’s important to be informed, Ellen Kritzman of the Vashon chapter of the League of Women Voters said. Candidate statements on their Web sites and in the state Voters’ Pamphlet are informative but also biased, she said.

Thus, she urges voters to check out endorsements, which can tell voters a lot. This is particularly true for judicial candidates, who can be the hardest to evaluate.

Those with Internet access can check out www.munileague.org for the civic group’s assessments of state Supreme Court and King County Superior Court candidates. Another nonpartisan source is votingforjudges.org, where voters can see the ratings of several associations, including the King County Bar Association, as well as local newspaper endorsements, she said.

Build Jacob’s mother a house

The Jacob Acier Group, formed to help Acier, an Islander who fled from civil war in Sudan, has established a bank account at the Vashon branch of Bank of America.

Acier, a “lost boy” of Sudan, reconnected with his mother and is helping her to rebuild her life. Now that she’s back in her native village in Sudan after years in a refugee camp, Acier and the Jacob Acier Group are raising money to enable her to build a home.

Hear options for VHS

Find out about the options the Vashon Island School District is considering for its potential renovation and rebuild of Vashon High School and the district’s two other schools at a public forum at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Vashon Cohousing’s common house.
