Islanders can sell their unwanted gold, pocket the proceeds and help students at Vashon High School — all at the same time — when the Asscociated Student Body (ASB) hosts a gold-into-cash party this weekend. 

ASB, which  supports all the co-curricular programs at the high school, is slated for cuts and will need to raise thousands of dollars, though the exact amount is not yet known, according to Susan Bakker, the office manager at the school. 

To help with fundraising efforts, the group is turning to gold, the price of which is at an all-time high — more than $1,500 per ounce. Some pieces of gold people purchased years ago may be worth more now than when they were new, organizers of the event said.

ASB representatives suggest people rummage around in their jewelry box to find broken, mismatched or unworn gold jewelry, bring it to the event and cash it in. Gold watches and dental work will also be accepted. Both yellow and white gold are fine, as well as pieces people are not sure are gold but want to find out.

A gold buyer will be on hand, evaluate the pieces and offer people the chance to trade them in, but there will be no obligation to do so, organizers say.

ASB will benefit from the event by keeping a small percentage of the proceeds from each transaction. 

The party will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Vashon High School lunch room.
