Learn about plankton
“Thank the Plankton,” a talk by Karlista Rickerson, will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at the Senior Center.
Plankton are microscopic life forms of many shapes in all bodies of salt and freshwater. Some are swimmers; some drift with wind and current; some photosynthesize, and some eat other plankton. Plankton gobble in carbon dioxide and produce 50% of the oxygen we breathe.
Rickerson, the speaker, is a citizen scientist and a member of the Photo Club at the Senior Center. She collects saltwater at Dockton, photographs, examines and reports to the Sound Toxins Phytoplankton Research and Monitoring Program. She also collects and sends mussels to the Health Department to be tested for toxins.

School Nurse wins Doors of Opportunity prize
Sarah Day, the recently retired school nurse for Vashon Island School District, was awarded the district’s prestigious Doors of Opportunity Award in August.
The award, selected by the school community, is presented annually to a teacher/administrator/employee who is “a person who by grit, by deed and by example, in and out of the classroom, opens numerous and varied doors for opportunity for their students.”
Day returned to the district’s annual all-staff “welcome back” event to receive the award and a standing ovation.
