It will be in with the new and sort of out with the old when Kathy Raines and Whitney Rose, current co-managers of Heron’s Nest Gallery, take over the spot in January to open a new gallery and workspace called Gather Vashon.
The mother-daughter duo envision a retail gallery, classroom, workspace and general gathering place for artists. To create enough room to fulfill their dream, they will expand into the area that formerly housed Dova Silks.
The gallery will primarily sell jewelry, which is Raines’ artistic medium, but also feature two and three-dimensional work of island artists. Fee-based classes and free events will also be held in the new space.
“We want it to be a place where artists who work by themselves can gather,” Raines said. “Our vision is to provide an opportunity to share projects and take classes — a feel-good place.”
Artists already slated to teach include jewelry maker Eric Hefflefinger, as well as Darsie Beck, who will hold his sketchbook/journalism classes there. The new owners are looking for other classes to offer, such as a jewelry-repair workshop to show others how to repair their own jewelry.
Meanwhile, down the street at Vashon Center for the Arts, the kiosk in the lobby will see an expansion to showcase and sell some of the artwork previously shown at Heron’s Nest. VCA Executive Director Susan Warner is supportive of Gather Vashon and excited for the next chapter of Heron’s Nest.
“We wish Kathy and Whit all the best in their new endeavor. We understand that Gather Vashon will have an emphasis on jewelry, which makes perfect sense with Kathy’s expertise in this area,” she said, adding that VCA will not only continue to operate the kiosk in the lobby but will also hold a series of trunk shows and at least one arts and crafts show/sale in the coming year, “which will highlight the island’s rich and diverse artistic communities.”
Raines said a distinction she and Rose will be making from how they ran the Heron’s Nest includes being more discerning of the work they show.
“With Heron’s Nest, as a nonprofit, we were supportive of any artists, but because Gather Vashon will be a for profit LLC, we will be selective about the work we think will sell,” she said. “We’ll still be giving opportunities focused on emerging artists a couple of times a year in June and December, our busiest times.”
The hours of the new spot will remain mostly the same — 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday except Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the summer months.
“We are open to the community and hope people will come in, hang out, bring in projects,” Raines said. “We’ll have a big table that seats 12, and we’ll welcome the community.”
