Voice of Vashon will make island history later this month when KVSH begins broadcasting on 101.9FM.
The station, the first FM radio station on Vashon, is set to begin broadcasting at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13.
“We’re proud to announce this wonderful news,” Jean Bosch, president of Voice of Vashon, said in a press release. “It was a big deal when we won FCC approval to build the new FM station on Feb. 21 of this year.”
This summer, VoV’s team of volunteers successfully tested the FM signal several times, indicating that many islanders will be able to hear the station at home, at work and in the car. However, the island is hilly and Vashon is legally limited to a low power transmitter, so it will be impossible to cover the island completely with one signal, they said.
Programming for the new station will reflect Vashon’s unique character, according to VoV volunteer Jeff Hoyt. The Morning Scramble will be live weekday mornings, and there will be new comedy programs, shows about community issues and wide range of music.
A VoV app for smart phones and tablets will also be available soon, making it possible to listen to KVSH and 1650AM alerts anywhere where there’s cell or WiFi service.
Station Manager Susan McCabe expressed the enthusiasm shared by the VoV board, staff and volunteers.
“It’s incredibly exciting. Those of us who’ve worked hard for this radio dream are simply amazed as we see our dream coming true,” she said.
