Joe Fitzgibbon appears to have handily defeated Mike Heavey for the House seat representing the 34th Legislative District, a large swath that includes Vashon Island, West Seattle and Burien.

Returns Wednesday — with 39 percent of the total registered voters’ ballots counted — showed Fitzgibbon with 55 percent of the vote and Heavey with 44 percent.

The two young men — both relative political newcomers and both Democrats — were engaged in a spirited race for the open seat. Fitzgibbon raised $103,745 for his campaign, Heavey, $98,745.

Fitzgibbon, 24, will be the youngest member of the House when he goes to Olympia in January. In a brief interview Wednesday, he said he’s eager to get started.

“I’m excited to get to Olympia and get to work,” he said.

Heavey could not be reached for comment.

In another race affecting Vashon, Joe McDermott defeated Diana Toledo to become a King County councilmember representing the Eighth District, which includes Vashon. McDermott, a state senator, opted not to seek re-election and instead sought the seat vacated by Dow Constantine, who is now the County Executive.
