Islanders are asking for donations to help with the medical bills of an elderly woman badly injured in a single-car accident on the north end last month.
Longtime islander Nancy Wallrof was driving on 103rd Avenue, often called “Ferry Hill Road,” on March 18 when she went into diabetic shock and lost control of her car. Her vehicle went off the road, collided with a parked car and slid down a nearby driveway.
Wallrof, who was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, suffered several injuries, including six broken ribs, a broken leg and a fractured back. She was recently released from Harborview and is now recovering at Linden Grove Health Care Center in Puyallup.
Wallrof has lived on Vashon her whole life and has been an active volunteer, said George Eustice, a volunteer with the Vashon Senior Center. In recent years, Eustice said, Wallrof has been active at the senior center. Her husband Paul, a retired college football coach, has also been an active on Vashon, helping start and grow the island’s youth football program.
Eustice said he and others at the senior center wanted to help the couple out with the significant medical bills they now face.
“They have always been a great asset to the community and gave very generously of themselves to the community,” Eustice said.
They set up an account in Wallrof’s name at US Bank and are also accepting donations at the senior center.
“They would do the same for someone else if it were reversed,” Eustice said.
Donations for Nancy Wallrof can be made at any US Bank Branch, or drop off a check at the senior center made out to “Donation Account for Nancy Wallrof.”
