The King County Council will hold a public hearing this month on the transfer of a piece of county property to the Vashon Sewer District.

The property was previously owned by the sewer district and was transferred to the county in 1999 to allow it to upgrade the Vashon Wastewater Treatment Plant. If the council approves a proposed ordinance, a portion of that land that was unused in the upgrade will be transferred back to the sewer district.

Amy Tsai, legislative analyst at the county, said the transfer was included in the 1999 agreement and the county approval process is simply routine.

Sewer district ownership of the land should actually benefit Islanders who live nearby, Tsai said, by maintaining a land buffer between the treatment plant and the residential area.

“As far as I know it would just be a nicely mowed grassy area,” she said.

The hearing will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 30 in Room 1001 at the King County Courthouse, located at 516 Third Ave. in Seattle.
