The King County Ferry District is soliciting input from water taxi riders on how to best use funds for improvements at Vashon’s water taxi terminal.

The ferry district recently obtained a small federal grant that will cover design and construction of a capital improvement at the Vashon terminal, said Michelle Allison, legislative aide to King County Councilmember Joe McDermott, chairman of the ferry district. The district is considering installing either a covered walkway and wind screen where passengers line up or covered bike storage at the terminal.

“Those are two suggestions we often hear from riders,” Allison said, adding that the district is open to other rider suggestions as well.

“We’re exploring how far we can use these dollars and what the public would like best,” she said.

Ferry district officials will discuss the project and take comments at the next meeting of the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council, scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at McMurray Middle School. Water taxi riders can also give input through an online survey that will be open through April 1. Results will be shared at the May VMICC meeting.

Of the three terminals served by the King County Water Taxi — Vashon, West Seattle and downtown Seattle — Vashon was the best place to put the federal grant to use, Allison said. The downtown dock is about to undergo renovations, and the West Seattle dock is leased by the county.

“Vashon riders wait in the rain and ride their bikes. They are exposed to the elements quite often,” she said. “Because you depend on ferry service, it would be a good way to use the grant.”
