Dems gather for good laugh

Come to laugh … and to groan. This month’s meeting of the Vashon Democratic Club will feature a variety of political video clips — both serious and humorous — from the likes of The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and Countdown with Keith Olbermann. If you want to get up to date on some of the issues of the day in a humorous way, here’s your chance. Come join us. All are welcome.

The club will also review our presence at the Strawberry Festival.

If you or your group would like to make a presentation at one of our meetings, or for general information, please contact me at 669-9459.

Our meeting is this Saturday, July 19, in the Land Trust Building: potluck social at 6 p.m., meeting between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Please help us accomplish our goal of a no-trash potluck by bringing your own, non-disposable dinnerware.

Fruit club prunes trees

Vashon Island Fruit Club will host a July 19 summer pruning workshop.

Early summer is the time for the largest and smallest cuts to your fruit trees. Learn about shaping, thinning and controlling those water sprouts. Our hands-on workshops will be taking place in two locations.

First, we will visit the orchard of Hal and Molly Green, located on 17526 Westside Highway S.W. Here we will take a look at issues such as larger shaping cuts that come with trees that are more than 30 years old. Enter the site via the driveway, and park on-site.

Our second stop will be at Carole Lynn Ives and Rick Paquette’s orchard, located at 18827 Robinwood Rd. S.W. The focus here will be on thinning younger, very vigorous apple and plum trees. Please park to the right of the driveway, so we will be able to exit easily.

Bring along your pruning tools and join in this hands-on workshop. Demonstrations will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 19. Please contact Mary Ornstead at 463-0565 with any questions regarding this event.

burlesque night

Vashon Island Golf and Country Club members are encouraged to make reservations today for the Cabaret/Burlesque Night at the club from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 19. Join us for an evening of great food and fabulous entertainment.

We’ll be bringing some of the acts from “A Wink and a Smile” to perform for us. There will be songs and funny burlesque acts served cabaret-style with dinner.

“A Wink and a Smile” is a feature-length film that premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival on May 28. It is a documentary about students of the art of burlesque in Seattle. People can go online at goldenechofilms.com to find out about the movie, which was written, filmed and produced locally by a Seattle woman who visits VIGCC often as a guest.

If you need to make reservations or get more information about these events, please call 463-2005.
