Quilters still sew for soldiers

Diane Brenno, Jeanne Holder, Jean Jones, Joanne Helsby and Ann Maher were hostesses at the June 17 meeting of the Vashon Quilt Guild.

During and after the meeting, members did the hand sewing of the bindings on many quilts to be donated to wounded soldiers through the American Hero Quilts project.

The second set of instructions for the Mystery Quilt project was distributed, and the Challenge project for the 2009 Quilt Show was given to those who wish to participate. Joanne Helsby is chairing that program.

Maggie Ball from Bainbridge Island was the featured speaker. She operates Quilters Without Borders, a project which began in 2004 to fund a community center in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Members were awed and inspired by her story and the progress she has made teaching the Mongolian women to sew beautiful salable items. Three hundred dollars was collected by “passing the fabric bowls” to assist Ball’s efforts, and many members purchased items (aprons, bags, bowls, jackets, purses, etc.) that she brought to the meeting.

For more information about Quilters Without Borders, see www.dragonflyquilts.com.

There is no meeting of the night Quilt Guild group in July. The next day guild meeting is at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15.
