Pool is open at VIGCC
The big news at the Vashon Island Golf & Country Club (VIGCC) is the opening of the swimming pool for the year. The pool will be open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be lifeguards on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Water aerobics started last Monday.
We will be offering swimming lessons again this year. The lessons are open to non-members. Information is available from the office at 463-9410.
This year Vashon Island residents will be eligible to apply for our new pool membership. The office has all the information. Call 463-9410 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
If you have sons or daughters who would like to play golf after school, VIGCC has a Junior Golf Program for only $25 a month. The program is open to non-members, and there are still spaces available. For more information, call the number above.
Members should mark their calendars for the Memorial Day barbecue from 2 to 6 p.m. Be sure to bring your friends.

RESULTS meets tonight
RESULTS is presenting two hot topics at its monthly meeting, at 7:15 p.m. tonight, May 21. Freshly back from Rwanda, Ann Lewis will share about her work with U.S.-funded HIV/AIDS projects there.
Then we’ll learn about the world food crisis and what we can do to ensure that no one goes hungry, both in the short- and long-term.
A leading force in ending hunger and poverty worldwide, RESULTS identifies and advocates for effective solutions to the causes of poverty and increases our government’s support for these solutions through powerful citizen action. It is one of the original forces behind the microcredit movement, which has now reached 100 million of the poorest families in the world with loans for small businesses.
The Vashon RESULTS group meets every third Wednesday, in the west meeting room of the Windermere building at 7:15 p.m. We learn about what we can do to make a difference in the lives of the poorest people around the world and then write letters to our members of Congress and newspapers. Topics are provided, as is postage, paper and pens. Meet with other Islanders who care and want to help make a difference in the world.

Learn about FamilyLink
How do we, as parents, best support our children along their educational journey; how do we help them explore their passions and develop their own unique gifts? The answer is the “Curriculum of Abundance.” Homeschooling dad, writer and storyteller David H. Albert will present some of his ideas and experiences from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the Vashon High School Library. Homeschooling parents and those considering homeschooling will want to participate in this opportunity to learn new ways to support their children and create an environment that optimizes the learning journey. See council on Comcast 21
Voice of Vashon’s television programming on Comcast Channel 21 next week will feature a rebroadcast of the May 19 general meeting of the Vashon Maury Island Community Council. The meeting will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 26, and will repeat for the next two weeks at the same time.

Italian club begins soon
There will be a monthly Italian club meeting the last Friday of the month starting this month from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 30, in the reception hall at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. This is an opportunity to meet fellow Italians, practice the language, experience the culture and enjoy some great authentic Italian food.

Fruit club holds tour
The Vashon Island Fruit Club will hold its first tour of members’ orchards this season beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 25. The tour will start at Hans Thompson’s place at 21715 131st Place S.W.
Please park on S.W. 220th Street and walk up 131st Place S.W., following the signs. At 2 p.m. the tour will move along to Paul Macapia’s at 9200 S.W. 156th St.
These site visits have been popular with members as the source of interesting ideas and discussion of issues. On Sunday, June 22, the workshop will focus on Bees and Berries at Bob Dixon’s and Bob Norton’s.

Donate to the Fur Ball
Vashon Island Pet Protectors is accepting donations for its annual Fur Ball fundraiser, to be held on Aug. 2. We’re looking for a wide variety of items and services to auction off: artwork, gardening, wine, vacation getaways, baked goods — you name it.
Sponsorships are also needed for the tents, food, music and silent tables. Proceeds from this event account for more than half of VIPP’s yearly operating expenses.
