Middle school success

“Strategies for Success” workshops for middle school students emphasize better organization, study skills and work ethic through easy strategies that students use to better pay attention and do the work.

These workshops are limited to 10 students in each class, and include work materials and snacks. Scholarships are available for students receiving reduced-price or free lunch.

The sixth-grade workshop is offered from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Oct. 16 and 17, and 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. The seventh/eighth-grade workshop is scheduled for 2:30 to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Oct. 23 and 24, and 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.

Breathing

A Transformational Breathing Workshop will meet from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct 18. Organizers say the day will be an exercise in self empowerment through breath, music, movement and fun.

Gentle martial arts

Qi Gong, Taiji Quan and Ba Gua Zhang have their foundations in the Daoist tradition of internal alchemy, Neidan, a systematized practice for the refinement of the energies of body, mind and spirit. Classes focus on the cultivation of health, stillness and martial skill.

Brian Dempsey teaches them Tuesday evenings at the Havurat Ee Shalom at 15401 Westside Hwy. S.W.

All ages and experience levels are welcome.

Classes are ongoing and can be joined at any time, Qi gong meets from 6 to 7 p.m., Taiji from 7 to 8 p.m. and Ba Gua from 8 to 9 p.m.

People can attend any single class, two, or all three. The cost is $5 per class.

Heating with wood

The Fireside Hearth Shoppe will offer a free class on safely using wood as a heat source at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. The class will be at its store in Burton.

Topics will include wood procurement/seasoning, proper fuel storage, wood stove maintenance, proper burning methods, general household fire safety and tips for do-it-yourselfers.

Meditation for kids

A meditation class for children ages 6 to 9 will meet from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 20 to Dec. 8, at 19206 Beall Rd.

Children will learn guided meditations and, through activities, will learn how to access the answers within, draw on their inner resources for support and connect with their own personal helpers — all of which will help them feel safe in the world.

The class is $35 per class or $200 for the series.

Help kids learn

“Success Strategies for Parents” is a two-hour, one-evening class for parents of children in fifth grade through high school. The focus is to teach parents easy, effective strategies for encouraging children to be more efficient learners and workers.

The class is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21. Tuition is $20 for one parent or parent-couple.

Managing livestock

“Streams and Wetlands: Living with Livestock Near Water,” the first of four workshops, will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Land Trust Building.

Islanders will learn how to design a stream or wetland native plant restoration plan, calculate the length and cost of an exclusion fence to keep animals out of aquatic areas, select native plants suited to aquatic buffers and outline a maintenance plan.
