A new class series begins at 6:30 p.m. today, April 9, and runs for five consecutive Wednesdays at the Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie.

Northwest plants

Discover the rich variety of Northwest native plants and their many uses in a series of seasonal ethnobotany classes for adults presented by Cedarsong Nature School naturalists Erin Kenny and Robin Rogers.

The first class of the year will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday April 13. Included in each class will be a plant identification and collecting walk, plant stories and histories and culinary and medicinal preparations made with plants in season.

The cost of each class is $52, supplies included.

Other classes will be on May 10 and June 14. Come to one or come to all as each month brings changes.

Teen Yoga

Yoga for Teen Girls, ages 13 to 18, will meet at Island Yoga Center from 2:45 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays beginning April 16.

Girls can get toned, get in shape and learn breathing techniques to help them be stress-free. This class is supportive and fun.

Dance and drum

RhythmJoy is offering Afro-Brazilian Samba dance and drum sessions from April 16 to May 7.

The drumming classes will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and the dance classes will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m., both on Wednesdays at the Havurat Ee Shalom, 15401 Westside Hwy.

The cost for each series is $64 for a four-week session. No dance or drum experience is required; beginners are welcome.

Dig classes

Dig Floral & Garden offers classes throughout the spring and summer. Pre-registration is required; call 463-5096.

The “I’m Too Busy to Water Garden” will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19.

Plants and gardening practices appropriate to the local climate will be emphasized as will gardening techniques to avoid losing water to evaporation and run-off.

“Flagstone” with Ross Johnson will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 20.

Johnson will demonstrate the best way to prepare the ground, place the stone and tamp down a handsome new addition to people’s landscape. This is a hands-on class to give people the information and skills needed to successfully complete a project.

March Twisdale is offering spring dance classes. The beginner class (fox trot, waltz, rumba, swing) runs Thursday, April 24 to June 19. Intermediate class (fox trot, Waltz, cha-cha, swing) runs Monday, April 2 to June 23.

Couples and singles are welcome.

Spring retreat

Islanders are invited to a contemplative retreat, which will include silence, labyrinth walking, reflective journaling, poetry and music. Nature walks and simple, healthy food will nourish the body.

The retreat will take place on a private Island residence from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26. The group will be limited to 10 people. The cost for the day is $40.

Hosts and facilitators are Al Ross-Weston and Carol Spangler. Weston is a therapist in private practice, writer and former Methodist pastor who leads classes, workshops and retreats on spirituality. Spangler is a graduate of the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation and is an experienced leader of contemplative groups and retreats.
