Visit with Will North
A visit with local author Will North will meet at 7 p.m. today, Nov. 12.
North will talk about his life as a ghost writer and novelist. Will’s column, North Passages, began appearing in The Beachcomber this fall and has focused on the meaning of place in one’s life. His first novel, “The Long Walk Home,” also explores the theme of home and place.
His second novel, “Water, Stone, Heart,” will be published in April, and he is currently working on a third novel, set on Vashon.

Harbor School open
The Harbor School will host an open house, “Building Academic, Social and Community Bridges in Middle School,” at 7 p.m. today, Nov. 12.

Farmers Market
The Vashon Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.
Farmers will sell Island-grown fruits and vegetables of fall, including pie pumpkins, winter squash, leeks, potatoes, carrots, cabbages, dinosaur kale, chard, brussels sprouts, sweet peppers, parsnips and more. Fall nursery plants will also be available. The Monkey Tree will sell warming soups, croissants and cinnamon rolls. Island artisans will sell services and goods, such as knife sharpening, warm hats and scarves, mason bee houses, outdoor furniture, chicken tractors, bunny hutches, beeswax candles, handbags, cutting boards, wooden spoons and more handmade goods as weather allows.
The Farmers Market is open for the season through Dec. 13, with the exception of Nov. 29, when the market will be closed for Thanksgiving weekend.

Holiday sale
An Arts, Crafts and Vintage Gift Sale will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. The gift items will include handcrafted items from local artisans, vintage glassware, useful products, sports memorabilia and much more.
The sale will be held at the former Old & Funqui building, 17311 Vashon Highway, behind AJ’s Espresso. Ten percent of artists’ sales will go to the Vashon-Maury Community Food Bank.

Christian youth concert
A free youth concert by Carpenter’s Tools International will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Presbyterian Church.
The group is the music ministry of Youth for Christ International.

Special ed parents meet
A discussion group for parents of special education students will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at McMurray Middle School library.
Larry Davis, special education consultant and advocate and former Vashon school district principal will offer an insider’s viewpoint of how to effectively advocate for your child in Individualized Education Plans and 504 meetings. There will be time for questions and answers. Part of the meeting time will be spent assessing the interest in creating a support group for parents of Vashon special needs children and interest in future meetings.

Healthy, efficient homes
A community service supervisor with Puget Sound Energy, Patti McClements, will describe ways people can make their homes healthier and more energy-efficient at the Senior Center on S.W. Bank Rd. at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18. The program is free and open to everyone.
She will work with people to find things in their home that may be making members sick and suggest an action plan filled with low- or no-cost solutions to make homes a healthy place. Many people can benefit from a home health assesments, she says: people with asthma, allergies or respiratory illness; families with young children who may be exposed to household chemicals, lead, pesticides, dust mites and other allergens, and people who have recently moved into a new home and are experiencing headaches or respiratory problems.

Science and spirituality
Theresa Ibis will give a free talk, “Bridging Science, Spirituality and The Prophesies of 2012” at the Puget Sound Zen Center from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18.
The purpose of this talk is to offer a bigger picture of the changes that are happening on planet Earth and what the long-term significance is all about.
Ibis has a doctorate in physics and travels nationally and internationally as a master teacher with the Rocky Mountain Mystery School. She will talk about vibrational energy, indigo children, the “New World” referenced by many spiritual traditions and what we can do as individuals and communities to prepare for the change that is on the horizon.

Audubon program
The November Audubon program will be a presentation by Wendy Gibble, the program manager for the Rare Plant Care and Conservation Program at the University of Washington. The program is free, and all are welcome to attend.

Pumpkin pie contest
The Vashon Island Growers Asso-ciation (VIGA) will host its third annual Pumpkin Pie Contest at the Vashon Farmers Market on Saturday, Nov. 22.
The Pie Contest winner will receive a hand-quilted apron to wear for a year made by 2006 winner Rebecca Wittman, a $25 Vashon Farmers Market gift certificate and an etched glass pie pan.
Pies will be judged by a panel of four Islanders: Rob Peterson of Plum Forest Farm (last year’s winner), Daralyn Anderson, Beachcomber publisher, Telly Christanis, head cook at Sea Breeze Farm Boucherie, and Barbara Wells, a regular Farmers Market shopper.
Pies will be given extra points if pie makers use Island-grown ingredients. Pies should be brought to the market at 10 a.m. Nov. 22, and VIGA requests that all pie bakers be present for the awards ceremony at noon.
Beginning at noon, slices of pie will be sold to market shoppers for $1 per slice to benefit the Vashon-Maury Community Food Bank.
The Farmers Market will be open as usual from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for all local Thanksgiving shopping needs.

Families skate
Families are invited to the Vashon Indoor Skate Park Friday nights, Nov. 14, 21 and 28 and Dec. 5 for Family Skate Fridays. From 5:30 to 9 p.m. inline skates and skateboards are all welcome, all ages too. The cost for the evening is $8 for per family up to four skaters.
