Poets read

Two poets from two islands will read at Books by the Way at 7:30 p.m. today, Nov. 19. Vashon poet Ann Spiers will read from her nature poems, and Mercer Island poet Kristen Spexarth will read from her new book of poetry, “Passing Reflections.”

Audubon program

The November Audubon program will be a presentation by Wendy Gibble, the program manager for the Rare Plant Care and Conservation Program at the University of Washington. The program is free, and all are welcome to attend.

It will be held at the Land Trust Building located at 10014 S.W. Bank Rd. starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20.

Great Decisions

Great Decisions, a current events discussion group, will meet at l p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the Vashon Library.

“Latin America: The Next U.S President’s Agenda” is the topic, asking how much emphasis Obama should place on enhanced economic cooperation and good will.

Bill Massey is the facilitator for the free series, which is open to everyone and sponsored by the Senior Center and Friends of the Library.

Pumpkin pie contest

The Vashon Island Growers Asso-ciation (VIGA) will host its third annual Pumpkin Pie Contest at the Vashon Farmers Market on Saturday, Nov. 22.

The Pie Contest winner will receive a hand-quilted apron to wear for a year made by 2006 winner Rebecca Wittman, a $25 Vashon Farmers Market gift certificate and an etched glass pie pan.

Pies will be given extra points if pie makers use Island-grown ingredients. Pies should be brought to the market at 10 a.m. Nov. 22, and VIGA requests that all pie bakers be present for the awards ceremony at noon.

Beginning at noon, pie will be sold to market shoppers for $1 per slice to benefit the Vashon-Maury Community Food Bank.

The Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., selling fresh fall food, including pie pumpkins, winter squash, leeks, potatoes, carrots, cabbages, dinosaur kale, chard, brussel sprouts, sweet peppers, salad greens, beets and more.

Lisabeula Gardens will sell fresh bittersweet wreaths to brighten the home.

Sol Source will sell hot soups, teas and lunch specialties. Island artisans will sell services and goods, such as knife sharpening, warm hats and scarves, beeswax candles, handbags, cutting boards and wooden spoons.

Cushman signs books

Vashon author Karen Cushman will sign her newest book, “The Loud Silence of Francine Green,” a young adult novel, at Vashon Bookshop at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22.

Stewart performs

“Hello House,” presented by Nancy Stewart, will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Vashon Library.

Singer-songwriter Nancy Stewart will give a guided musical tour through your house and explore fun and easy ways the whole family can stay safe and go green.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an adopt-a-cat day every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at its new adoption center at 12200 S.W. 243rd St.

‘For My Wife’

The film “For My Wife…” will show at the Vashon Theatre at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23. The film is the story of one woman’s fight for marriage equality and how she became an activist.

The film received three awards at the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and has been accepted into the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

A question and answer period with Charlene Strong, who is featured in the film, and the Vashon film makers David Rothmiller and LD Thompson will follow.

Tickets will be $6.

Chautauqua book fair

Chautauqua Elementary School and the Vashon PTSA will host the annual Book Fair until Nov. 25.

Families, teachers and the community are invited to attend the Book Fair, with the theme, “Book Fair Safari.”

The book fair will feature a special family event with a book exchange (please bring books to trade), Ooey Gooey Science Night with Barbara Gustafson, popcorn, bake sale and a special guest. The evening event will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21.

The book fair will then be held weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the third floor common area at Chautauqua.

The fair will offer specially priced books and educational products, including new releases, award-winning titles, children’s classics, interactive software, adult books and current bestsellers from more than 100 publishers.

Book fair customers may help the school build classroom libraries and improve children’s reading skills by purchasing books through the Classroom Wish List and One for Books programs.

Library story times

Toddler Story Time will meet at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25.

Kids from 21 months to 3 years will enjoy stories and songs just right for toddlers.

Preschool Story Time will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, and 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19 and 26. Kids ages 3 to 5 are welcome for 30 minutes of stories, songs and fun.

Lapsit Story Time will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19 and 26.

Children from newborn to 20 months with an adult are welcome for a 20-minute program of stories, songs, rhymes and bounces. The room is reserved for playtime and socializing after the program.

Families skate

Families are invited to the Vashon Indoor Skate Park Friday nights, Nov. 14, 21 and 28, and Dec. 5 for Family Skate Fridays.

From 5:30 to 9 p.m. inline skates and skateboards are all welcome, all ages too. The cost for the evening is $8 for a family of up to four skaters.
