Thanksgiving yoga
A Day-After-Thanksgiving yoga workshop at Island Yoga Center with Ronly Blau will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 28.
Titled “Cleansing the Body Temple,” this two-hour yoga class will include purifying breath practices, asana aimed at detoxifying the body and cleansing the digestive tract and end with a generous retreat for the mind through restoration and meditation.
Beginners with at least three months of recent yoga experience and more advanced students are all welcome.

Families skate
Families are invited to the Vashon Indoor Skate Park Friday nights, Nov. 28 and Dec. 5, for Family Skate Fridays.
From 5:30 to 9 p.m. inline skates and skateboards are all welcome, all ages too. The cost for the evening is $8 for a family of up to four skaters.

Adopt-a-cat day
Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an adopt-a-cat day every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at its new adoption center at 12200 S.W. 243rd St.

Laughter class
A free “Laugh for the Health of It” class will meet from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Island Yoga Center.

Ceili dance
The Vashon Celtic Dance Society will host a community Irish Ceili dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Grange with live music provided by the Vashon Ceili Band.
Renowned Seattle dancer and caller Kathleen O’Grady-Graham will teach and call the dances.
The regular suggested donation is $8 ($6 for students and seniors).
The Grange Hall is located in the ferry dock parking lot at the north end of the Island.
Ceili dancing is a “barn dance” style accessible to nearly everyone. No partner or experience is required. Photos of past dances can be found at www.hoilands.com.

Great Books Discussion Group will talk about “The Playboy of the Western World” by John M. Synge from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1.

Calligraphy
Islanders can learn the art of calligraphy with Barbara Roberts at the Senior Center on Bank Road at 10 a.m. Tuesdays, Dec. 2, 9 and 16 and Jan. 6, 13 and 20. The fee is $12, and the class is open to all ages.
Roberts is basing the class on the teachings of Lloyd Reynolds’ “Italic Calligraphy & Handwriting.” Participants should commit to attending all classes and practice every day. Supplies are available, but people should bring their own if they have them.

Heritage cookie expo
The Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum is hosting the first annual Heritage Cookie Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6 and 7.
It’s a chance for Islanders to share their family’s special cookies, recipes and cookie histories, across generations and cultures. Bakers are asked to provide three dozen cookies for each recipe entered, delivered between 9 a.m. and noon on Dec. 5, and to fill out an entry form that includes the recipe and a “cookie bio,” explaining its importance to the baker and his or her family.
Cookies will be sold, with free samples of each entry for a “People’s Choice” award. All proceeds of the sale go to support museum programs and outreach. For entry forms and more information, visit or call the Heritage Museum at 10105 S.W. Bank Rd., 463-7808.
Drumming circle
The Community Drumming Circle, open to all drummers, will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Common House at Vashon Cohousing, 10421 S.W Bank Rd. The group offers facilitated improvisation/freestyle drumming and percussion and is led by drummer extraordinaire Geoff Johns.
All are welcome. A $5 donation is suggested, but no one will be turned away. Bring your drums and percussion instruments. Johns will have drums available to borrow.
