Parent awareness forum
The PTSA will host a parent awareness forum about teen drug and alcohol abuse at 6:30 p.m. today, April 2, in the Vashon High School library.
Islanders are invited to attend and hear presentations from Stephen Bogan, teen drug and alcohol counselor; Susan Hanson, principal of Vashon High School; David Chapman, an attorney who will speak on parental liability issues concerning underage alcohol and drug use; a Vashon teen currently in recovery; and a parent of a teen in recovery.

Women drum
Dark of the Moon women’s drumming circle continues to meet monthly on the weekend nearest the new moon. This month the group will meet at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6, with a potluck to follow. The group creates a relaxed and open atmosphere and has plenty of instruments to share.

Civil rights forum
The King County Office of Civil Rights (OCR) will host a forums on Vashon to provide practical advice for everyone focusing on the civil rights basics: how to recognize discrimination, where and how to report it and how to stop discrimination from occurring.
This forum will give practical help to renters, property managers, employers, employees and building and business owners who have questions about their responsibilities and rights under anti-discrimination laws.
The meeting will be from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at the Vashon Library.

Water providers
“The Roles and Responsibilities of Water Providers” will be offered at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at the Land Trust Building. Educator Mary Howell of Evergreen Rural Water of Washington will address the different roles co-owners, board members and the designated operators, managers and purveyors play in the business of providing drinking water.

Evening in Vietnam
Essentials 4 will present an “Evening in Vietnam” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 18, at the Land Trust Building.
Everyone is welcome to bring questions and input on their experiences.
Ticket are $10 per person at Essentials 4 or $12 at door. The Evening in … series is a benefit for Sustainable Tourism On Vashon www.stov.us.
Science Fair
The annual science fair will take place at the McMurray Middle School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 19. The community is welcome. Special features will include Insect Safari, the Audubon Society and hands on science activities by Barbara Gustafson.
Preschool auction
The Vashon Maury Island Cooperative Preschool will hold its annual benefit auction at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the VFW Hall.
There will be a silent auction, live auction with Kevin Joyce as the auctioneer, music by the Candlelites and entertainment by Martha Enson, as well as a tapas bar and regular bar. The theme this year is Noche En Espania.
Tickets are on sale at the Burton coffee stand, Vashon Bookshop and Books by the Way.

Island inn tour
Many Vashon Island innkeepers are opening their doors for a one-day tour of Island lodgings on April 22.
Inns north of Cemetery Road will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Inns south of Cemetery Road will be open from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Those interested in car-pooling, may meet at the Chamber office at 8:45 a.m. or 1:15 p.m.
The inns participating are all members of the Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce.

Zen weekend
The Puget Sound Zen Center will hold a Family Zen Weekend, May 10 and 11, at Camp Sealth. The program will run from 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning to 3 p.m. Sunday.
The weekend will include chanting, sitting, walks and activities, as well as time to play. Participants of all ages will prepare the food and share meals with periods of silence.
Registration ends April 15, so sign up soon. The cost for non-members is adults $100 and children $70. For members the cost is adults $90 and children $60. Children 2 and under are free.
