Plant sale

The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club’s annual plant sale will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 3, and run until plants are sold out at a new location this year, the former Island Variety site next to Vashon Market.

Annuals, perennials, herbs, grasses, shrubs, trees and an expanded boutique, including hand-painted garden accessories, will be for sale.

Farmers Market

The Vashon Farmers Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Village Green. Farmers will be selling Vashon-grown plant starts, trees and perennials, as well as meat, dairy, eggs, wine and more spring produce.

Island crafters will display and sell Island-made artwork, children’s clothing and toys, lamps, jewelry, soaps, essential oils, specialty chocolates, cutting boards, incense and cards and will also sharpen knives and give chair massages.

Sol Source will sell hot soup, hum bows, rice curry and other lunch specialties.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an adopt-a-cat day from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday at Pandora’s Box.

Tie-dye celebration

Islander Dave Pekarek will host a May Day tie-dye celebration at his Burton home from 2 p.m. until dusk Saturday, May 3.

Islanders are invited to bring their 100 percent cotton light colored or white clothing to dye.

Portage Fill

Vashon’s Portage Fill band will play a benefit performance at Bethel Church; proceeds will benefit The Bailey-Boushay House, an AIDS hospice in Seattle.

The dance begins at 7 p.m. Satur-day, May 3, and donations will be taken at the door.

Kids’ book club

The Vashon Bookshop Kids’ Book Club, for kids 8 to 11, will meet this month at the Beall Greenhouse for an art project with Island potter Liz Lewis and to discuss “The Tarantula in My Purse” by Jean Craighead George at 6 p.m. Monday, May 5.

Great Books group

The Great Books Discussion Group will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 5, at the Vashon Library.

The group has been meeting at the Vashon Library for 30 years. Join the group for stimulating discussions of the really great books.

This month’s selection is “Franken-stein” by Mary Shelley, who was married to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Mary Shelley started to write an entertaining ghost story that evolved into the phenomenon we know it to be today. The story raises questions about the creator and our human nature, how when well-meaning people tinker with nature, malignant results can occur.

No registration is necessary.

Stewart performs

Mother Goose on the Loose, presented by musician Nancy Stewart, will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Vashon Library.

Favorite nursery rhymes come to life with interactive props and lots of help from young audience members.

The show is for ages 2 and older. No registration is required.

Youth-Adult Dialogue

The next Youth-Adult Dialogue will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Presbyterian Church. 

The group will continue exploring the theme of fear, with more focus on encouraging authentic voices and truth. 

The purpose of the dialogues is to gather to listen to Island youth and their concerns with a wider perspective from our community.

All interested people are welcome to join the group in an effort to “get real” with each other through commitment and action.

Dinner will be offered for free for people bringing their own reusable eating utensils, bowl and mug.

Poetry salon

This month slam poetry is the focus of this monthly (first Wednesdays) get-together of folks who love to talk about poetry. The gathering will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the Vashon Bookshop.

Interested people are invited to bring what they know, what they’ve read or what they’ve heard about slam poetry.

Rumor has it that there will be at least one representative from the performance poetry community. Or people can bring a poem they love or wrote or anything to talk about that has to do with poetry or poets.

Newcomers and drop-ins are always welcome, and being late or leaving early is never a problem.

‘Empty bowls’ benefit

The Vashon High School Interact/Amnesty International Club will host an “Empty Bowls” benefit dinner for the Vashon Island Food Bank at 6 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the Vashon Island Cohousing Common House.

The evening will include a soup dinner, open-mic entertainment and an auction for unique ceramic bowls created by Island artists and students.

The dinner is free if people bring their own bowls to eat out of, but those who would like a bowl for the evening should bring a $2 donation.

Both monetary and canned food donations for the food bank will also be collected at the event.

Island storyteller Merna Hecht will bring May Magic and Tales of Wonder to the Vashon Bookshop at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, for people of all ages.

Land trust tours

The land trust will host spring tours at various times Saturday and Sunday, May 10 and 11.

Take Mom on a lovely walk for Mother’s Day. These tours are good for all ages. The featured preserves are Marjorie Stanley Forest Trail walk, Ellis Creek Estuary at Tramp Harbor and Piner Point Beach walk.

This is the first time the land trust is offering tours of these shoreline areas. Details are available at www.vashonlandtrust.org.

Drama Dock auditions

Drama Dock will host auditions from noon to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 17, and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, for the “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde. Callbacks will be from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 25. All auditions will be in the multipurpose room at McMurray Middle School.

There are roles for four women and five men — late teens to seniors.

Those trying out should plan to attend one of the audition times from beginning to end. Prepared monologues are welcomed. Scripts are available for reading at the Vashon Library information desk.

Performances will be July 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27. Elizabeth Ripley will direct.
