Wednesday market

The Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 2 to 6 p.m. today, Sept. 24. Farmers will be selling a wide variety of Island-grown vegetables and fruit, including apples, plums, raspberries and melons.

All the Wednesday farmers take WIC and senior checks as part of the Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

The Wednesday market is open through Oct. 15.

SATURDAY 27

Farmers Market

The Vashon Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Farmers will be selling Island-grown flowers, fruits and vegetables of late summer, including plums, tomatoes, corn, squash, pumpkins, apples and herbs, as well as eggs and wine.

Tiny’s Organic will have fruit from Eastern Washington. Most farmers take WIC and senior checks as part of the Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

Sol Source will have spring rolls, miso soup, teas and other lunch specialties. Island artisans will be selling a wide variety of services and goods, including hats and scarves, candles, furniture, jewelry, art, tiles, soap, cards, cutting boards, knife sharpening and massage.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an adopt-a-cat day from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Saturday at the new VIPP adoption center and right now has many cats in need of loving homes.

Poetry reading

The Vashon Library will present a reading by poet Cal Kinnear at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28.

Kinnear will read from his latest book, “A Walk in Bardo.”

The poet is a third-generation resident of Seattle who has worked as a college teacher, bookseller, dancer, waiter, sailor, hiker, carpenter and grant writer. He is currently director of Washington Lawyers for the Arts.

Kinnear’s poems have been published in numerous reviews and journals.

Following the reading, Kinnear will sign and sell his books.

Barack the Vote

Barack the Vote, an event in support of Barack Obama’s campaign for the presidency, will meet in Ober Park from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3. Music and guest speakers are currently being lined up, with more information coming soon. The event will be free; however, the Obama/Biden campaign folks will be onsite taking donations, and organizers hope those who are able to give $50 to the campaign will if they can.

There will also be a voter registration booth; it is the last weekend to register to vote before the presidential election.

CiderFest

The first annual CiderFest will meet in the Village Green on Saturday, Oct. 4.

A multitude of events will happen throughout the day.

• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Farmers Market

• 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fruit club fruit show

• 1 to 2 p.m. “How to Make Hard Cider”

• 3 to 4:30 p.m. (or until the food is gone) PTSA pie and crumble sale

• 3 to 5 p.m. Bob’s Your Uncle plays

• 3 to 6 p.m. Hard cider tasting

• 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. CiderFest dinner at The Hardware Store Restaurant. • Master Gardeners will be around much of the day.

The PTSA sale is a benefit for the Vashon Island School District, while CiderFest itself is a fundraiser for the Vashon Island Rotary Club’s scholarship fund.

Solar tour

The Vashon Solar Tour, featuring eight all-solar sites, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. Self-guided tour maps are available at 13129 S.W. 248th St., the home of Jennifer and Jason Williams, owners of Artisan Electric, where people can also participate in several question-and-answer forums, which will be repeated throughout the day, at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m.

Seven homes and the Chautauqua Children’s Garden are included on the tour, showcasing a variety of solar systems.

The tour is co-sponsored by Artisan Electric and Sustainable Vashon.

Great Books

The Great Books discussion group will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at the Vashon Library.

The reading will be “Goblin Market,” a poem by Christina Rossetti.

The Great Books Group has been meeting at the Vashon Library for 30 years. Everyone is welcome.

Library story time

The Vashon Library will host story times for young children this month and next.

Toddler Story Time will meet from 10:40 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays until Oct. 14. Kids ages 18 months to 3 years with an adult caregiver are welcome for 20 minutes of stories and songs just right for toddlers.

Preschool Story Time will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesdays until Oct. 14, and at 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays until Oct. 15. Kids ages 3 to 5 are invited for 30 minutes of stories, songs and fun.

Lapsit Story Time will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesdays until Oct. 15.

Babies from newborn to 17 months and their caregivers can stop in for a 20-minute story time.

No registration is required.
