WIC program
New to WIC this month, the program will have a community access worker who can help with applications for DSHS food stamps, cash, medical coupons and child care, Basic Health insurance, energy assistance and low-income housing. No appointment is needed.
WIC provides free vouchers for nutritious foods as well as nutrition education for qualifying low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and children up to age 5.
The clinic is held the third Wednesday of every month from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Access to a registered dietitian, social worker and public health nurse is available through this program.
The clinic is located at the Vashon Methodist Church, 17928 Vashon Highway S.W.

Wolftown fundraiser
The Back Bay Inn will host a Cowboy Christmas from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, in its refurbished restaurant, the Quartermaster Pub.
There will be live music from Island band Riverbend and a group photo exhibit focused around Vashon’s Wolftown. Ray Pfortner, Robert Teagardin and three Blue Heron photography classes will be showing their work, and there will also be note cards, mouse pads and Wolftown calendars for sale with all proceeds going to Wolftown.

Folk choir performs
Vashon’s new singing group, the Free Range Folk Choir, will perform a free concert at the Burton Church at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19. The group, under the direction of Shane Jewell, will present a program of world folk music with songs from South Africa, the Czech Republic, England and Georgia (near Russia) as well as a traditional Jewish song and a modern gospel tune.
Jewell brings more than 17 years of musical experience as a performer, teacher and arranger of classical, folk and a cappella music.
Donations will be appreciated.
Great Decisions
Great Decisions, a current events grassroots discussion program founded by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), will meet at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at the Vashon Library.
Led by Bill Massey, the conversation will focus on “Foreign Aid: New players, New goals?” The FPA and others think the whole concept of foreign aid is undergoing a transformation, with new forms of assistance, new donors and new ways of measuring success. Will a different approach produce better results?

‘The Nutcracker’
The closing weekend for Vashon Island Civic Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” will be at Vashon High School this weekend.
The shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 19 and 20, with a matinee show at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, as well.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors age 60 and over, $4 for kids ages 5 though 12 and free for kids 4 and under.

Adopt-a-cat day
Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an Adopt-A-Cat Day every Saturday from 11:30 am. to 2:30 p.m. at its new adoption center at 12200 S.W. 243rd St.

Sing-along
The community sing-along will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Vashon Theatre. Get in the holiday spirit with Vashon’s annual holiday caroling.
Seniors sing
Phyllis Smith, accompanied by Mary Rosenbaum, will sing at the Senior Center’s monthly potluck at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at the Senior Center on Bank Road.
Everyone is welcome for good food and caroling. Board member Ellen Trout chairs the potluck; call her with questions at 408-7167.
Lessons and carols
The parish of St. John Vianney Catholic Church is presenting a Lessons and Carols service at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21.
The service will feature sopranos Jennifer Krikawa and Marita Ericksen, tenors Kevin Joyce and Gary Koch, baritone Andrew Krikawa and violinist Karen Choo. Charles Lovekin will accompany on piano and organ, and Kevin Pottinger will conduct.

‘The Messiah’
The Vashon Island Chorale will host a sing-along of Handel’s “Messiah” at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at the Vashon Methodist Church. Gary Cannon will conduct. A small orchestra, which Gaye Detzer is assembling, will also play. Any instrumentalist who would like to play may contact Detzer.
Everyone who loves to sing or who loves the “Messiah” is encouraged to come.
Bring your own vocal score if you have one, or copies may be borrowed or purchased ($7.95) at the door.
Admission is by free-will donation for the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank.
New Year’s Eve party
An alcohol and substance free New Year’s Eve party for the community will be held at the Vashon Presbyterian Church from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31.
Games and activities for all ages will be available. A “New York New Year” will be celebrated at 9 p.m. followed by ice cream sundaes provided by the church. Bring a snack to share if you’d like.

Pride New Year’s Eve
Vashon Pride Alliance will host a New Year’s Eve dance from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the VFW Hall.
The $10 door admission provides fellowship, dance music, munchies, Vashon High School scholarship fund and hall rental expense monies.
Gays, lesbians and gay-friendly people are welcome.
