‘Plenty’ potluck
Vashon College wraps up its “Feeding Ourselves” lecture series on today, Oct. 22, with an appearance by Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon, authors of “Plenty: Eating Locally on the 100-Mile Diet,” the Vashon Reads book selection for 2008.
Smith and MacKinnon have appeared throughout the Northwest, speaking about the experiences, hardships and inspirations they encountered during their year-long food experiment.
The lecture and discussion will be accompanied by a community potluck emphasizing and celebrating locally grown foods. Guests will also include the presenters from the “Feeding Ourselves” series.
The lecture and potluck will be held at the Presbyterian Church starting at 6:30 p.m. Entrance to the event is complimentary, although attendees are expected to provide a potluck item suitable for six to eight people.

Civil rights forum
The King County Office of Civil Rights will host a meeting from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Vashon Library
People can learn how to recognize discrimination, where they can report concerns and how they can stop problems.
King County Office of Civil Rights investigators will be on hand to answer questions. Informational materials will be available.

Book group meets
Vashon Bookshop’s book club will meet at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, to discuss Willa Cather’s classic novel “My Antonia.” Newcomers and drop-ins are always welcome.

See ‘Uncounted’
The film “Uncounted” is an explosive new documentary that contends the election fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to even greater fraud in 2006 — and now looms as an unbridled threat to the outcome of the 2008 election.
This controversial feature-length film by Emmy award-winning director David Earnhardt examines how easy it is to change election outcomes and undermine election integrity across the United States. Noted computer programmers, statisticians, journalists and experienced election officials provide evidence.
The Vashon Youth Council will host the viewing at the Vashon Theatre at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23.

Halloween reading
Island author Marcia Vaughan will read from her new children’s pop-up book “Five Pesky Pumpkins” at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Vashon Bookshop. All ages are welcome for this friendly Halloween gathering.

Redefine retirement
Beverly A. Battaglia, Ph.D., Island resident and author of “Changing Lanes: Couples Redefining Retirement,” will read from and sign her new book and share how couples have successfully dealt with the unexpected challenges of retirement.
She and her husband have been part-time Island residents for 10 years, and she interviewed many Islanders for the book.
Books by the Way will host the event from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.

Drugs and teens
PTSA is sponsoring a parent information night, “Drugs, Alcohol & Your Teen,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in the Vashon High School library. Stephen Bogan, a chemical dependency counselor, will present information on various topics, including developmental effect of drugs and alcohol on the teenage brain, peer pressure, what parents can do, warning signs and resources available for help.
There will be time set aside for questions and answers.
Plan BARC
The public is invited to attend a meeting at the Vashon Indoor Skate Park in Burton to provide community input on designs for the Burton Adventure Recreation Center (BARC). Island resident Jim Gerlach will present design drafts for input from anyone who’d like to use the skate park, BMX track, disc golf course or playgrounds and picnic areas at the completed BARC.
