Bicycles and motorcycles took to Vashon’s streets last weekend during Saturday’s Passport to Pain and Sunday’s Isle of Vashon TT.
Both of the annual events benefit local nonprofits. The Passport to Pain (P2P) bike ride proceeds go to the Vashon Island Rowing Club, and Isle of Vashon TT riders donate to the food bank — $500 this year.
According to P2P organizer Bruce Morser, this year’s ride — the sixth annual —was the biggest one yet. He said a record 330 riders signed up, with nearly 200 finishing the 80-mile “Idiot” that gains 10,000 feet of elevation.
“I guess that means the island was full of complete idiots,” he joked in a Monday email.
He also said that while the numbers are still being worked out, the event raised more than $30,000, exceeding last year’s $19,000.
Meanwhile, this year marked the 31st Annual Isle of Vashon TT. Organizers at Vintage Motorcycle Enthusiasts (VME) estimate more than 1,000 bicycles took to Vashon Sunday.
“There were 570 who registered for the ride and estimates are that twice as many motorcycles were in attendance,” VME member Jody Heintzman said.
In addition to the food bank donation, the group also has adopted Cemetery Road and participates in King County’s road cleanup program. The Isle of Vashon TT also benefits the Vashon Grappler’s Society, which provides food services at the Sportsmen’s Club.
