Health care insurance is a subject that’s grabbed headlines for much of 2013, but the other half of that equation ­— health care delivery — has remained largely in the shadows. Vashon Allied Arts’ popular Arts & Humanities series will host Gerry Greaney, whose career is dedicated to progressive “design thinking” about transforming health care delivery, at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Blue Heron.

Greaney is a senior designer and researcher at the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation (CFI) in Rochester, Minn. He collaborates with a team of 60 experts from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to look at ways to transform health care delivery using a creative exploratory process, an approach Greaney first learned as a graphic designer.

Greaney and his team collect data from direct interaction with health care consumers and providers, a method that helps reveal details often overlooked by more traditional science-based approaches to assessment.

“Our medical culture is very analytical… but can be slow to change,” Greany said in a press release. “In this field, change has to happen. The old model is totally unsustainable. It’s not the best for anyone, providers or patients.”

In his talk, “Transforming Health Care,” Greaney will share stories and highlights of his past work and current projects, all centered on his progressive philosophy toward health care development.
