Arrest, hospitalization follows local shooting

The islander who was shot was taken to a mainland hospital in stable condition.

One person was arrested and another was taken to a mainland hospital with a gunshot wound following a domestic violence incident with a weapon the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 10, according to fire and law enforcement officials.

The incident saw a swarm of law enforcement vehicles converge on Vashon’s south end in the 13000 block of SW Caster Road. KCSO communications manager Brandyn Hull confirmed that one person was shot.

The islander who was shot was taken to a mainland hospital in stable condition, according to Vashon Island Fire & Rescue Interim Fire Chief Ben Davidson.

The incident, as it unfolded, prompted an email to families from the Vashon Island School District at 3:55 p.m. on Monday. The message said that due to an active police presence near Wax Orchard Rd, the district’s school bus #8, which travels on that road, had to make an emergency detour and would return to Chautauqua Elementary School. At the time, the bus was carrying 12 high school and middle school school students.

Parents were advised to pick up students at Chautauqua Elementary School who normally ride the bus after its regular run for McMurray and VHS students — resulting in a long line of cars in the school’s parking lot that afternoon.

The Beachcomber is working to confirm whether the person arrested in this incident has been charged with a crime. The paper does not ordinarily name suspects in crimes who have not been charged.

This is a developing story.
