Vashon Island Youth Chorus and I Solisti di Vashon Youth String Ensemble will perform Vivaldi’s “Gloria for Young Voices and Instruments,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Vashon Methodist Church.

This performance will mark the revival of the Vashon Island Youth Chorus, a group of nine choral members ages 10 through 18, led by Marita Ericksen. The chorus has not performed since 2008. I Solisti Di Vashon is a group of eight high school string players under the director of Gaye Detzer.

The choral work they will perform this weekend has a rich history, going back to the time Antonio Vivaldi spent directing a choir and orchestra at an orphanage in Venice, training young orphans to become masters of music. His “Gloria” is based on his stories from the orphanage and celebrates the fame and success that young people attained through their music, with his help and mentorship.

The performers will do a reader’s theater style dramatization of the Vivaldi story, featuring Vashon High School senior Meghan Murphy in a leading role, with the remainder of the chorus and string ensemble members portraying the orphans in Vivaldi’s music class.

Ericksen is excited about the performance and reported that her singers “have risen to the challenge of singing a higher level of choral repertoire in two and three-part harmonies.”
