What’s happening this weekend

Second Friday wine tasting

Vashon Winery’s Ron Irvine continues his search for the best table wines from around the world with the Second Friday Wine Tasting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at Café Luna. Irvine will offer five wines for $10. Tasters are invited to hang around and enjoy Ronnda Cadle’s acoustic guitar.

Solo guitarist plays Café Luna

Ronnda Cadle will play a free show at Café Luna from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11. As a solo guitar instrumentalist, Cadle fuses heartfelt emotional content with masterful guitar work, organizers of the event say. With over 20 years experience playing her original compositions across the U.S., Cadle, who hails from Camano Island, has shared the stage with other well-known musicians, including Sarah Bettens, Al Petteway, Patty Larkin and 2003 American Music Award Winner Moe Loughran.

Folk duo visits the Bike

The Kings of Mongrel Folk will play a free show at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at the Red Bicycle. The duo of Mark Graham and Orville Johnson combines wry humor, virtuoso harmonica, soulful blues, hot pickin’ and sweet country vocals. Johnson, an instrumental gunslinger whom the Seattle Times describes as a “player’s player,” has shared the stage with Doc Watson, Bonnie Raitt and John Lee Hooker. Graham’s harmonica virtuosity and rich clarinet sound are well-known to fans of Kevin Burke’s Open House. The show is all ages until 11 p.m. and 21 and over after that.

Show off your Salsa

Free Salsa dancing hosted by Darryl Caldwell will be offered at Café Luna form 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12. The first 30 to 45 minutes will be instruction, and then students are on their own to dance the night away. No previous Salsa experience is necessary.

Series features world concert

Guitarist Ken Jacobsen and singer Azula will be joined by special guests bassist Jason Everett and percussionist Geoff Johns for an evening of world music form 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at The BookArts Building (formerly the VFW Hall). The program will feature a variety of music, from Brazilian pop and Portuguese fado to Mexican folk, Spanish songs and Middle Eastern music.

The show is the third in Rez 1 Productions’ new Second Saturday Concert Series, a platform to spotlight local musicians in a venue where the audience is not distracted by a bar scene. Melodie Trottier and Gabe Blake will open the show, which has a $5 cover charge.

Jazz trio swings into the Heron

The Nelda Swiggett Trio will play at the Blue Heron Art Center at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12. The show is part of Vashon Allied Arts’ Panache Jazz Series. Drawing from jazz, Afro-Cuban, gospel and blues, the trio released its debut CD last year. Swiggett’s music was lauded by one website as a “bright palette, a sinewy execution and a powerful, assertive command.”

The trio was selected to perform in Seattle’s internationally renowned 2010 Earshot Jazz Festival and was coined by one reviewer as easily one of the best performances of the year.

Complimentary wine and chocolate will be served before the show. Tickets to the show, $15 and $18, and are available at Blue Heron, Heron’s Nest, Books by the Way and BrownPaperTickets.com. Call 463-5131 to reserve by phone.
