Seattle director and actor Keira Knightly team up
The independent comedy “Laggies” will play at the Vashon Theatre as part of the First Friday art film series at 9:30 p.m. Friday.
Directed by Lynn Shelton of Seattle, the film is set in the Emerald City and is an unusual and comedic portrayal of a young woman struggling through a rocky period in her late 20s. Before “Laggies” begins, Vashon director Jessika Satori will present her short film “How Do We Wanna Go Out.” The short was shot mainly in Washington state and is a personal tale of grief and grace.
Tickets are $7 at the box office.
Band plays 1940s jazz
Step back in time to the rhythm and romance of 1940s vocal jazz and swing standards performed by Delilah Pearl & the Manatrays at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Red Bike.
Pete Welch, music promoter and co-owner of Vashon Events, said of Pearl, “When you close your eyes an listen, you would swear you are in some speakeasy during the 1940s, it’s really good. Pearl has surrounded herself with great musicians, and she has this sweet, sultry voice.”
Pearl’s Mantarays include Dodd Johnson on drums, Michael Whitmore on guitar, Greg Dember on piano, Barry Cooper on trumpet and Toliver Goering on bass.
This free show will be a CD-release party for the band. All ages are welcome until 11 p.m., then 21 and older only.
Two artists show unique jewelry and leatherwork
Vashon Allied Arts is holding a one-day holiday trunk sale on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Blue Heron.
The show will feature unique jewelry and leatherwork collections by two skilled artisans — Seattle-based Tia Kramer and Vashon resident Martha Kirk.
Kramer designs elegant, modern jewelry in sterling silver and handmade Philippine plant fiber paper. Her accessories are found in galleries, museums and museum stores, including Seattle Art Museum and the Netherlands’ CODA museum.
With various leathers and stitching techniques, Kirk creates chic accessories — from bracelets to wallets and purses to tote bags — with rustic charm. Her original line strikes a perfect balance of fashion and functionality.
