Vashon Repertory Theatre’s Second Annual Theatre Fest will open with a concert presentation of a brand new musical bound for New York, penned by a Vashon native.
The show, “Somewhere Between,” tells a contemporary small-town coming-of-age story, with original music and book by islander Alan Bruce Becker.
“The show is about blazing your own trail in life, and dodging the path your loved ones try to put you on,” said Becker, who grew up on Vashon and still maintains a home here. He has had an extensive career with theater companies in New York, Los Angeles, and Europe.
His latest work features new music in a pop-jazz style, and a story laced with humor, pathos and surprising twists. And its well on its way to delighting audiences in New York and beyond, after its run on Vashon.
The piece was selected as one of six world finalists at the MUT international composer competition in Munich and was promptly invited to have a German-language premiere — currently in the works. Simultaneously, a New York company with more than a dozen successful off-Broadway shows to its credit has offered to stage the American version.
On Vashon, “Somewhere Between” will be staged at Vashon Center for the Arts, in Kay White Hall, with a public preview on Thursday, July 21, and performances on July 22, 23, 29, and 30. Showtimes are 7 p.m. on Fridays, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays.
The show is directed by Chris Serface of Tacoma Little Theatre, with musical direction by Paul Linnes and orchestrations by Grammy-winning Broadway veteran Steve Orich, of “Jersey Boys” fame.
The playwright and Vashon Rep will be welcoming Vashon audience feedback after each performance, in order to help polish the script and score in time for the New York opening.
The Vashon Repertory Theatre Fest will take place in three different island locations, packed into the last two weekends of July. Indoors, “Somewhere Between” will be staged at Vashon Center for the Arts, while “Seeger,” a one-man show about the life of the iconic folk artist, plays in Open Space’s Bruce Black Box Theater.
Outdoors, Shakespeare’s popular comedy, “Much Ado About Nothing” and fresh physical theatre performances in “5-Minute Wonders” will be performed in the meadow at Open Space for Arts & Community, where catered meals will be available each Saturday and Sunday of each weekend, from Orca Eats food truck, Iyad’s Syrian Grill, Mica’s Kitchen and Thyme Well Spent catering.
“Plays in a Snap,” a series of readings of new plays by Northwest authors, will be presented at the Black Cat Cabaret in the Snapdragon Bakery & Café with the café’s full bar and menu available.
