Joyful rock at Café Luna
Seattle singer/songwriter Larry Murante will make two appearances on Vashon on Saturday, May 31, starting with a performance at Vashon Farmer’s Market and ending the day with a 7:30 p.m. concert at Café Luna.
Murante is known for crafting beautifully woven stories, combining compassionate, socially conscious lyrics with an upbeat, joyful, energetic folk/rock style.
Both of Murate’s May 31 performances are free.
Edson photos through June
An exhibit of 100 or so works by famed local photographer Norman Stewart Edson continues through June 8 at the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum.
Edson, who made his home on Vashon from 1921 to 1968, is best known for his many scenic shots around the Northwest and his depictions of Mount Rainier, including his most famous work, “Sun’s Last Glow,” a shot of the mountain framed by fir trees and produced in a variety of media throughout his career.
The show can be viewed during special museum hours: 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Anyone who contributes $1,000 or more during the run of the Edson show secures a lifetime membership to the heritage museum as well as the right to use the museum for one personal event sometime within the year of making the contribution.

Handbell and chime choirs
Vashon Handbell Choir and the “Just in Chime” youth chime choir, along with Sarah Church on flute, will hold their Impressions of Summer concert from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Vashon United Methodist Church, located at 17928 Vashon Hwy S.W. Tina Parrish will direct the concert, which is a “dessert by candlelight” event.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Childcare is provided.
Poetry slam
A poetry slam kickoff celebration in the Village Green will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 6. In following months, poetry slams held at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month will be a monthly feature at Café Luna.
When slammers fill the café, the intergenerational events will bring a genre of entertainment to Luna outside the realm of typical café fare.
The events are sponsored by Development Of Island Teens, the Vashon Park District, the Vashon Youth Council and Café Luna. The poetry slams are youth-directed events, although they are aided by adults.
“We want all ages to participate in the slams. The youth council really encourages intergenerational efforts and events,” said Julian Park, youth program coordinator of Vashon Youth Council.
Poetry salon
A poetry salon will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the Vashon Bookshop.
Poetry lovers will embrace the Bard of all bards, William Shakespeare, and his verse. Bring a favorite sonnet, poem, question or Shakespearean puzzle, or bring any poem, original or not. Or, come and listen.
The Poetry Salon will take a summer vacation and will not meet during the months of July and August.
Orchestra to perform
Vashon-Maury Chamber Orchestra will play concerts at 7:30 pm Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, at the Vashon United Methodist Church. The program will feature “Spring” by Vivaldi, Beethoven’s “Romance in F major” for violin, “Serenade” by Tchaikovsky and “Nocturne” by Borodin.
Violin and harpsichord soloists, the duo “Clave del Sol,” will perform a set of Bach and Piazzolla pieces. Tickets by donation will be available at the door.
More than 20 musicians of all ages comprise the orchestra, under the direction of Jonathan Graber. After this concert, Graber will take a leave of absence for a year while he goes to Honduras on a Fulbright Fellowship to teach violin at the National Autonomous University of Honduras.
Graber, violinist, violist and conductor, serves as conductor and music director of the Vashon-Maury Chamber Orchestra and concertmaster of the Gig Harbor Peninsula Symphony Orchestra. He is a substitute member of the Seattle and Tacoma Symphonies and former concertmaster of the Northwest, Olympia, and Rainier Symphony Orchestras.
