Vashon Library beckons youth and parents to summer programs

Make gnomes, blow bubbles and more.

Vashon Library, located at 17210 Vashon Hwy SW, is pulling out all the stops with free summer programs for island youth and the young at heart.

Many of the following programs are sponsored or will have materials provided by Vashon Friends of the Library. No registration is required for the following events, and all materials are provided.

Foam Sword Party

11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, July 6, on the Ober Park lawn. For all ages.

Engage in mock battles on the lawn outside the library.

Mini Gnomes

1-3 p.m. Thursday, July 11. For ages 6 and older.

Sculpt a custom tiny gnome for your garden or houseplant.

Strawberry Perlers

5-6 p.m. Wednesday, July 17. For ages 5 and older.

Make a cute retro strawberry accessory to wear to Vashon’s Strawberry Festival.

Stomp Rockets

1-2 p.m. Thursday, July 25, on the Ober Park lawn. For ages 5-12.

Launch a paper rocket into the sky with just the power of your biggest jump.

Forest Shrink Art

5-6 p.m. Wednesday, July 31. For ages 5 and older.

Color in a cute forest creature and then shrink it to make a key chain or necklace.

Fairy Houses

1-3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1. For ages 5 and older.

Make a special spot for magical creatures to live.

Bubble Festival

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. For all ages.

Stop by to blow some big beautiful bubbles outside the library.

Amazing Magic Show

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, on the Ober Park lawn. For all ages.

Prepare to be blown away at this magic show.

Picture Frames

1-3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29. For all ages.

Customize a picture frame to preserve a summer memory.

Story Times

Baby and Toddler Story Time, for ages birth-3 years with an adult, takes place from 10-10:45 a.m. on Thursdays, on the Ober Park lawn. Preschool Story Time, for ages 4-6 with an adult, takes place from 11-11:30 a.m. on Thursdays, on the Ober lawn.

Teen Hangout

This program, for grades 6-12, offers games, crafts, snacks, and time to chill out and takes place from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, June 25-Aug. 27.

Reading in the Park

This program, for all ages, takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on two Tuesdays, July 23 and Aug. 27, on the Ober Park lawn.

Bring a book or check one out at the library, then sit on your own blankets, chairs or the grass. Some chairs and blankets will be available to borrow, and warm-weather snacks will be provided.

Picnics in the Park

If you’re at the library around lunchtime, enjoy Vashon Food Bank’s Picnics in the Park. The annual program is now underway and will run through Friday, Aug. 30 on weekdays.

Lunch will be served every weekday at Ober Park from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lunches are also served at Burton Area Recreation Center (BARC) from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

The Picnics program provides free, nutritious meals and activities for children of all ages during the summer months when kids don’t have access to school meals. The target population for the program is the 23 percent of island youth who qualify for free and reduced-priced school lunches, but free lunches are provided to all without proof of need.
