A fundraiser for DoVE at the Bike

The Fieldhands, a mix of Vashon Island talent that plays mostly original music, will perform Friday at a fundraiser for the DoVE Project, Vashon’s new anti-domestic violence program. Jon Whalen on lead vocals and guitar will share the stage with singer/songwriter Dorsey Davis on bass and Simon Martin on drums. They will be accompanied by lead guitarist Richard Lipke of Subconscious Population fame. Their music in the Americana and power-pop styles ranges from folk-rock and blues to countrified ballads.

Glenn, Glenn & The Glenn’s will open the event.

The show, with a $5 suggested donation as a cover, begins at 8:30 p.m. and is an all-ages show until 11 p.m., 21 and older after that.

The DoVE Project, a program of Vashon Youth & Family Services, is committed to assisting domestic violence survivors in finding and using existing resources. Through the DoVE Project a survivor can gain access to a support group, get help with legal procedures and speak with an advocate.

Clinton returns to the Rock

Always a crowd pleaser on Vashon, Clinton Fearon & The Boogie Brown Band is returning to the Red Bicycle for an end-of-summer performance of his roots reggae music Saturday night. If you like roots reggae, this is a show you won’t want to miss.

Fearon, a native of Jamaica who now lives in Seattle, is counted among Jamaica’s most talented musicians by peers and professionals in the Reggae music industry. His infectious bass riffs have always led the way, whether he is playing bass, guitar or percussion, singing lead vocals or providing background harmonies.

When asked about his music recently, Clinton said, “It’s not too far from the root. I’m not trying to branch off into anything I’m not totally relaxed with. A lot of (other bands) try to follow the market. I try to follow my creativity more so than follow the market. It’s what’s in your heart; you have to follow your heart.”

The show begins at 9:30 p.m., with a $10 cover. It is an all-ages event until 11 p.m., 21 and over after that.  The Red Bike has experienced sold-out shows with Clinton in the past and anticipates the same for this one. Advance tickets can be purchased by calling the Bike at 463-5959 or visiting the bistro.

Chorale to honor 10th anniversary of 9/11 with Mozart’s Requiem

The Vashon Island Chorale under the direction of Gary Cannon will present a free community concert to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. More than 80 singers, including professional soloists Jennifer Krikawa, Julia West, Jim Brown and Jonathan Silvia, will perform the Mozart Requiem at the Vashon High School gym at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11. A full orchestra, which will include members of the Vashon High School band, will be under the direction of Karen Choo.

The chorale’s performance is part of the national “Rolling Requiem,” an effort to commemorate the 10th anniversary with Mozart’s immortal music “rolling” across the country, starting at 3 p.m. Eastern time and moving westward.

A free-will offering at the concert will be donated to the Vashon Schools Foundation in the belief that “education makes our world a safer place,” according to organizers. For additional information, see www.vashonislandchorale.org.
