A laugh a minute
Local funnymen Kevin Joyce, Steffon Moody and Jim Farrell, along with special guest Andre Sapp, will take the stage for a night of stand-up comedy at 8 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Red Bicycle Bistro. This will be the Bike’s first Vashon Comedy Night of 2012, and Moody said it’s coming “just in time to dispel the moldy mid-March madness that inevitably grips the soggy Northwest this time of year.”
Past Comedy Nights have had a bigger line up with much shorter sets. This four-comedian format will give the performers room to stretch their acts and deliver more laughs, Moody said.
Spring for chamber music
Vashon Maury Chamber Orchestra will presents its spring concerts on Saturday, March 17, at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Vashon Methodist Church.
Guest artists Kenneth Jacobsen and Elizabeth C.D. Brown will join the group for “Fantasia Corelliana,” a 1999 work for two guitars and strings by American composer Roberto Sierra.
Two Vashon Island High School seniors will also join the spotlight. Oboist Erica Walker and violinist Kyle Gagner will perform concerti by Bernadetto Marcello and J.S. Bach, respectively. Works of Grieg and Arensky will round out the program, along with a Piazzola tango with Island flautist and tango instructor Janeen Bramwell on bandoneon.
The 11 a.m. performance for kids will include selections from Grieg, Bach and Piazzola, with emcees Kim Thal and Amy Broomhill, and special guests Kyle Gagner (violin) and Janeen Bramwell (bandoneon).
Admission to the morning concert is by donation. Tickets to the evening concert are $10 general and $7 for students and seniors.
Local artists show spine
The Backbone Campaign’s annual music fundraiser — a time when dozens of Island musicians take the stage to play one song tied to a specific musical theme — is set for 8 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Red Bicycle Bistro. Tickets to the show are $20.
This time around, the theme and name of the evening is broad — “Red Hot Police Who Clash for Kinky Petty Cash.” That means that participants can choose to cover music by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Police, The Who, The Clash, The Kinks, Tom Petty or Johnny Cash.
Twenty-four Islanders have already signed up to step in the spotlight — a group that includes bluesman John Browne, Troll’s Cottage founder Jacob Bain, songstress Kat Eggleston and local legend Ron Hook. For a complete list of performers and more information, visit www.redbicyclebistro.com.
